Hatton would be at the lower end of the Hall of Fame list for me. Here's a comparison of a fighter with a similar resume to Hatton, but most people would probably never consider him HOFer material, at least not yet: Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz: Diaz's win over Acelino Freitas is similar to Hatton's win over Kostya Tszyu Both fighters have beaten Paulie Malignaggi Diaz's win over Michael Katsidis and Jose Miguel Cotto is similar to Hatton's wins over tough competition like Urango, Tackie, Maussa Diaz's lost to ATG Juan Manuel Marquez is similar to Hatton's lost to ATGs FMJ and Pac You can make the argument that Hatton's resume is slightly better because he has fought more (Hatton has fought 47 fights versus Diaz's 38 fights) and Hatton won a close (but controversial to some) fight with Luis Collazo at welterweight, and Diaz lost a split decision to a respectable champion in Nate Campbell, and Diaz lost in the rematch with Paulie Malignaggi (but Diaz moved up to lightweight for both his fights with Malignaggi eventhough they were both catchweights).
Hatton was an A- brawler who got his ass beat by two all-around great A+ P4P legends, oh and a turnbuckle.
I went with HOF'r at this point, but I think he can come back and continue his career. If he's successful (unifies a division, beats a p4p fighter, fights on for a number of years) then I'd say ATG. But we have yet to see if he's got it left in him.
Not a horrible analogy, but Ricky's only 2 losses came to the 2 ATG's who are the 2 best fighters of his era at/around his weight class. Camplbell and Malignaggi are hardly that.
i voted good fighter, but to be honest, im not completely sold on what he done... no one would have been screamin about hatton had he not had the followin he has - because hes a nice guy & a funny one at that... his stylkes not pretty, he doesnt have very many technical advantages over anyone hes fought, hes just a rough and ready brawler imo, B level fighter at best
I'll give Hatton a little bit more credit. He's fought more B/B+ fighters in his resume such as Phillips, Castillo (who's actually an A/A- in my book but was pass prime when Hatton fought him), and the others that I've already mentioned, but of course he's fought more fights as well compared to Diaz. So based on this, Hatton is clearly ahead of Diaz. Wins over B/B+/B- fighters are great for anyone's resume, and so Hatton has fattened his resume in this respect. Hatton should make it (but barely) in the Hall of Fame right now, and especially if he keeps on fighting decent competition. If he fights 5 more B range fighters at their primes (or near it) and wins, it will really help his resume.
True. I think Hatton is in a bit of a gray area in his career, and could go either way. His fluctuations in weight have done him no favors. He could get beat into retirement..... or..... he could reassert himself with a few good showings. IMO he needs to stay away from top guys, i.e. Bradley. Diaz still has time on his side, but if recent trends are any indication, he needs to head back down in weight, and fast. He's lost 3 out of 5 and could be on his way to irrelevancy if he doesn't get back on track.
Definate HOF'er Dominated 140 for years and only lost to the cream of the crop, one of the times seeing him go up in weight to fight Mayweather. 2 weight world champ, didn't do what alot of fighters do in protecting his 0 as he tested himself and has a solid resume.
