Running long, slow distance runs doesn't help.
Yep, see my post on the aerobic energy system.

Learn stance, hand position, basic footwork, and basic punches from a trainer or a trained boxer (amateur is fine). It's worth the two lessons at let's say $50 each. Then start a running program (say two-three miles four days a week), buy a Ross Enamait book and use his routines four days a week, and SHADOWBOX, SHADOWBOX, SHADOWBOX.....EVERY DAMN DAY, AT EVERY DAMN OPPORTUNITY. GOOD LUCK!

saying it doesnt help is ignorance, LSD running is what originally got me into great shape and something you should always keep in your regime somewhere HOWEVER doing 8-12 miles every day because you read pro boxer "X" did this is also ignorance

Let me clarify. From what I've read, Boxing is considered primarily anaerobic (75%), as is sprinting, weight lifting, etc..

Distance running, cycling and swimming are all aerobic exercises.

Personally, I run 3 - 6 miles, two or three times a week. I've been doing that for a few years.

When working the bags, I've got no stamina problems.

Doing mitts with my coach wears me out, more than a long run.

Sparring, I'm winded after a round. Much more draining than a 6 mile run.

Every coach I've talked to said that distance running is good for recovery of energy, but sprinting builds stamina for explosive "bursts of energy" needed for punching.

So, in my case, I have the aerobic fitness to recover energy in the resting moments, but my anaerobic fitness level sucks and was the reason I get winded.

I've been trying to incorporate HIIT and plyometrics into my training to compensate.

Here is an article I read on it: http://www.rossboxing.com/thegym/thegym21.htm
