We all know that moving back down to LHW doomed Roy after winning a heavyweight title from Ruiz. He had a lot of options and picked arguably the worst one. Looking back, what do YOU think he should have done after beating Ruiz?

A lot of people felt he should have retired, but personally, I thought he should have defended the heavyweight title at least 2-3 times, then gone down to Cruiserweight and fight for a title in the only weight class in the upper half of boxing he hadn't yet become a champion in.

He should have went after that dream fight with Tyson. Failing that, Holyfield or Byrd then retirement.

Retired and he would have been considered a top ten all time great, his legacy has been tarnised a bit since then,if he called it quits people would have talked about him as a god..

Against a "real" heavyweight champion wouldn't have gone down well. It would have directly wiped out his victory over Ruiz as having been a "cherrypick".

Back in weight like he did was the better option, because who expected him to have such trouble with Tarver at the time?

Retiring would have been the best option in hindsight, but didn't look to be the best option at the time.

    Fight Lennox Lewis.Win-win situation.
If he wins he is a top 10 ATG,if he loses nobody would blame him,Lennox is much bigger.

Ideally. I would have liked to see him pursue the actual heavyweight crown, but that is a massive task and he really was undersized.

What he did after was actually pretty good for him. Tarver 1 is one of his best wins and does more for his legacy than Ruiz in my opinion.

I agree. That might actually be his 2nd/3rd best win, considering that he was no longer prime and really hasn't fought a style like Tarver before. Winning the HW belt was a good achievement, but let's be clear about this. He beat the weakest of the belt holders with not much of a punch.
One thing we learned from what followed was that Roy did/does not have the best beard. I will not say it is china, but it was average at best, so a win against a heavy with legit power might have too much of a mountain to climb.

For his sake- unify with Byrd, and if he won face Lewis (win-win situation like another poster said).

For our sake, Im glad he faced Tarver, Tarver deserved his shot.

his weight was 193, he should have just fought at cruiser, only other 2 options were retire or go for lennox.

The scale was wrong...he was 200 something..The reweighed right after that.

He should have outboxed Mike Tyson for a stupid pay day and quit.

Or taken the weight off properly and gone back down to 175.

Ow well that explains it the, he still could have gone to cruiser.
I honestly think he should have retired after tarver 1 or 3, after the johnson loss it was proven roy was shot and there was no reason for him to continue hurting himself after that.
