The further info referee to special gloves to fit his enormous hands-that makes sense.
But nowhere does that show what you describe, that the Baer camp insisted upon gloves that weigh one pound just for Carnera-nor does it mention the weight of the gloves.

Please provide a hyperlink to any information supporting that claim.
I am happy to be shown that, but many folks believe things that are taken on rumor or faith.
Any news story will do, thanks.

Does it?

Didn't Willard have 14in fists just the same as Carnera? Did he need bigger gloves?

You may be correct, a quick Google search yielded this: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=prino+carnera+fist+size

It is amazing that Liston at just over 6' & without any form of giganticism could have the largest fists!
The size of his hands & width he had at the shoulders makes the extemely unusual + 11 & a 1/2" "ape factor" of a 7' wingspan within the bounds of plausibility.

They are HUGE.
I honestly thought you'd used some smart software there for a minute to give him cartoon-sized white gloves ! But it's legit, isn't it, not a reznick production. It's crazy .... and there I was thinking Carnera was fixed to win fights.

No that would never have happened. In a title fight, Its most likely a tailored glove to fit his hand would have been made..but the stuffing over the knuckles would have been weighed to match that of the opponents glove.

admittedly it looks Carnera was made to wear balloon gloves against Gains.

If software was that good, I'd replace Foreman's gloves with sledgehammers.

Can we find any more info on this?

Could Baer's team really convince the then current champion to use heavier gloves?

Checking the next day reports, there does some to be some questions around the fairness of the decsion.

Gains was the British Empire champion, so he was somewhat of the home fighter.

It all has to do with the gate and wagers. It seems me, that if it wasn't agreed upon, there would be no fight. They both signed contracts and agreed on their purse size, which, would amount to maybe $100,000 or more? All I can tell you is that Primo, was fighting with a handicap. The heavier 16 oz. gloves could have an affect of slowing his punches and power. Max had 6 oz. gloves as stated by the sportswriter, as a fact.

If that was true, yes Primo would have been handicapped.

But a larger glove might not mean 16oz mits. It might just mean a larger 6oz glove.

Felt the need to do some digging on this one.

There actually was a debate about the size of Carnera's gloves, because if they were the standard 6 ounces they would be stretched "skintight" over his massive hands. Baer's people insisted that both fighters should have the same amount of padding over the knuckles, irrespective of the weight of the gloves.

Seems to have been resolved with custom-made gloves which weighed only 6 ounces despite being a foot long.
