Got to admit, I'm a little in the dark about Harry Greb. It's a little hard to figure out how any fantasy fight pans out with him.
So anyway, with that, what about Greb Verses James J Jeffries himself?
I's this a competitive fight or a complete mismatch with the heavyweight champ being too Hardy and powerful for Greb?

    I'm really not sure tbh.!

I think Greb could probably do as well as Corbett did,for a few rounds before Jeffries body shots started to take his legs away ,after which it would be one way traffic imo.

    Cheers mcvey.
Like I mentioned, I'm not on solid ground with Greb.
Obviously seen his record and read a few articles on the man, often wonder how he'd do against guys like Jeffries, Dempsey, Max Baer, that sort of thing.
That sounds about right, similar to the Corbett and Fitz fights, with Greb doing well, then the stronger man coming on.

I think it would be many rounds of Jeffries plodding after him while Greb lit him up like a swarm of bees. Dempsey got set on fire by Greb in their sparring sessions and I don't fancy Jeffries to be half as explosive as Dempsey.

Jefferies by brutal KO. A middleweight isn't going to survive standing there in close range trading with a strong durable guy over 200 lbs who can rip into the body and unleashed short combinations.

Greb is head and shoulders above Jeffries as a fighter , but I doubt Greb can damage such a big man enough to avoid being stopped later on.

There's the rub, one of, if not the fastest, quickest, most elusive fighter in history, why would he stand and trade with a big , strong HW like JJJ, as BCS8 as alluded to, he will slap, annoy, bewilder Jeffries to the enth degree, he will be chasing a shadow, whether Greb can avoid the ropes for 15 rounds is up for debate, but it not beyond the realms of possibility that Greb runs away ( literally ) with a wide points victory.
    stay safe buddy.

I think so too. I'm a huge fan of Harry Greb but I don't think he stands a chance against Jim Jefferies. Jefferies was great friends with Farmer Burns and practiced catch-as-catch-can wrestling with him. He would manhandle Greb and knock him out.

Since there is no footage of Greb, my assessment of the fight is based on descriptions of him. I got the impression he was a high volume pressure fighter with quick hands and unorthodox technique. Was he known for lateral movement and ambush in and out tactics?

I don't think Harry would be standing there trading, his modus operandi was ,"here there and everywhere",trying to hit him was described as like trying to hit a bobbing cork in a stormy sea.

    Hi Buddy.
You are not alone in thinking he was a pressure fighter, lots of posters think the same, I have been reading anything and everything about Greb for over 40 years, all the books, starting with James Fair ludicrous account of his life and fights in " Give him to the Angels " right up to SL Comptons " Live fast die Young " which by the way is the seminal book on Greb, so I like to think I have a pretty good take on his fighting style, I have posted lots of descriptions' over the 2 years or so , which you might want to reference, briefly he was completely unique, he truly was, no fighter ( that I have read about ) comes even remotely close to emulating his weird and frankly unfathomable style.
So, he would rush in arms wailing in all directions, he would start low, in a crouching position, then tattoo his opponent from mid section to head with rapid blows in a windmill ( there's a clue ) action, not particularly aiming at any specific part of the other fighters anatomy, head, arms, torso, his punches would be landing at blinding speed, from any direction, you could not block or evade, it would be like fighting a Octopus with gloves, they were not very hard punches, but they stung and cut, furthermore when at last the incessant bombardment would stop, Greb would be gone ! gliding back out of range, your punches were hitting nothing but air, it must have been like trying to hit a phantom a ghost, something unreal, THEN back he came, just as you were exhausted from your efforts, that amounted to nowt, the whole disheartening process would be repeated, minute after minute, round after round, you would be getting more and more tired, he would be getting more persistent, the attacks were even faster, the punches hurt more, his stamina levels increase, the longer the fight the fresher he looks, your corner has no answers, your only reprieve is the bell, and oh how you wish for it's comforting sound.
    stay safe buddy.

    Terrific post, Mike.

I appreciate you describe his style as likely unique, but if you had to pick 1 fighter whose style most closely resembled how you imagine Greb's, who would it be, please?

For me, it's Calzaghe. Southpaw, fast hands, insane work rate and sacrifices single punch power for volume. I suspect Greb was more physical in approach and typically put more into each punch, particularly relative to late career Calzaghe, when his hands really were a mess. I'm not saying Calzaghe is either a replica of how I imagine Greb or anything like as great (he clearly isn't), but I'm really interested to hear if you think there's a fighter who more closely resembles what you imagine Greb's style to be like.

Greb clowns him over 15 rounds. Has him groggy towards the end.
