I find in very interesting that you seem to be fond of Sullivan and Greb who are not of film but pretty much blast every old time who is. Interesting. Greb based on his style, lack of range, and lack or power would be a fly buzzing in Jeffries ointment but lacked the range ( reach ) and power to be anything but annoying to Jeff who hit way harder than anyway Greb fought. Jeffries had a good footwork to match and knew who to cut off the ring. He would not get dirty with Jeffries either. It would be a good show for a few rounds but Jeffries would win via KO in about round 6 or so.

Thanks buddy, appreciate your kind words, yes I can see parts of Greb ( as described ) looking like Calzaghe, also parts of Pryor, and also Hamed, and a sprinkling of Armstrong, no one fighter would replicate Grebs style.
    stay safe amigo, chat soon.

Greb swarmed and then got back out of range, but i foresee because Grebs punches were not that powerful then, Jefferies would put up with the nuisance of the incoming swarm and fire his own much more powerful punches while Greb was in range, plus if Jefferies were to have Greb in range if he wasn't punching Greb he would be dominating him with his physical strength.

Ok big Jim might get cut, but that sort of taking punches to land his own was often his style anyway.

Big Jim too big and tough for Greb to defeat.

It would be nice to know what either of them was, before being asked to answer this question!

We can sort of give Greb the benefit of the doubt, because he kept beating great fighters, who we have quality film of.

If we ever see film of him, and he looked awful, the we would have to redefine what good looks like!

Jeffries has the same problem in spades.

There is no special pleading for him!

Greb weighed about as much as Fitz and Choynski for some fights , both of whom gave Jeff interesting evenings.
Harry didn't hit like either but by all accounts he was a damn sight faster and more elusive.
If he is considered by some to have been a threat to a prime Dempsey,he sure as hell would have been to Jeffries !

I think Jeffries' size would carry the day here...

Jeffries couldn't handle the crude brawling of Sharkey without suffering immense damage. Corbett and Fitz were dinosaurs in every sense of the analogy and gave him plenty to worry about.

Greb handled big Bill Brennan FIVE TIMES, twice having him on the verge of a stoppage, an opponent who possessed ten times the science of Jeffries. Brennan wasn't a linear pursuit,, hands down slugger who took to give. He had a nice, long jab and excellent uppercuts, good timing and loads of power. Never mind Greb, I would pick Brennan over Jeffries.

You mean he had trouble with the HOF heavyweight in Sharkey fighting with a bad arm. Corbett was 33. Fitz was deadly.

But they were on film for you to pick at, Sullivan and Greb are not. By the way who did Bill Brennan beat? Names please. Wait he is on film you know. Sure you would pick him over Jeffries.:nonono

Greb was listed. H 5’8” R “71”. Some listings had Greb H 5’9” but they were the exception.

    Tom Sharkey was listed H 5’8” R 70”.

    Fitz H 5’11 3/4” R 71 1/2” - and Fitz had no problem hitting Jeffries.

Later photos of Greb standing with Tom Sharkey suggest that The Sailor was perhaps somewhat shorter than listed.

Yes, you do lose a bit of height but generally not the amount that Tom appears to be dropping to Greb.

Also, look at the pre fight line up of boxers prior to Johnson vs Jeffries 1910. Standing alongside Fitz and Bill Lang?, Tom looks quite short even back then.

Burns is several people removed from Tom in the line up but in estimation, it appears that Sharkey barely had a height edge over Tiny Tommy.

I recall Ketchel, generally afforded H 5’9” is in the line up - also, for comparison, and he appeared clearly taller than Tom too.

Corbett wasn’t known for his punching power but he easily skirted around and popped Jeff good over the better part of 20 rounds - and descriptions of that bout state that Jeff was rocked by Jim on a few occasions. -

Greb did best when he could swarm his opponent and fight them in close. Make it a rough and dirty affair. He couldn't do that with Jeffries. I think Jeffries had enough in his bag to catch up to Greb in the late rounds and win by stoppage. I think Jeff is just a bridge too far for Greb.

It's very possible.Jeff liked to use his weigh to lean on fighters he did it to Fitz, and Sharkey,he couldnt do it to Corbett because Jim was too quick for him.darting in and out. Fighting Greb has been described as like trying to catch lightning in a bottle would Jeffries be able to corner him? It took him 23 rds to catch the 33 years old Corbett.

    Depends how long it is.

Bad night for Jeffries if it's 10.

Bad night for Greb if it's 25.
