What stopped Cotto From being a great?

Cotto was very fortunate that the rematch with Margarito was stopped due to Marg's cut. If it was not for the cut, I could of seen Margarito stopping Cotto again. Margarito may have been limited, but he certainly had Cotto's number.

 

Indeed, it sure looked like it was going that direction again. Cottos face was beat to hell after that fight

 

The worst part was Cotto carrying on after the second Margarito fight like it was some great victory, it wasn't, you were fortunate, and he didnt quit like YOU did

 

Margarito was heading towards a TKO of Cotto in fight 2, no doubt. Cotto's relief when that was stopped was obvious.

Cotto is slow, and quite predictable, he fights in an orthodox stance but leads with his left so his power punches are easier to see, I don't think he has great movement either. His strength is that left jab, also good body shots so useful when he fights a guy on the inside, but anyone with good reach and speed are always going to give him problems

Very true! After the first Margarito beating and then running from Pacquiao he was finished. You can see in the first 6 rounds against Floyd he looked shell shocked, barely threw a punch and it wasn't just Floyd's jab, he was scared to get stuck in - only when the fight had slipped away from him did he get a bit braver

Very true, his mentality is a huge reason

 

Margarito I and Pacquiao fight ****ed him up mentally,and i cant blame him for that,those were tremendous beating he took,especially the pac fight.
And changing trainers and stupid managament didnt help as well.
Still he is elite fighter in my eyes.
EDIT:No way in hell that marg was gonna win the second fight even if it continued,he would have a watermellon instead of his eye at the end of 12 round.
Cotto get bruised up real easy,i have a friend who also looks like smashed pig with baseball bat after sparring and fights.

 

Marg was starting to power through Cotto - thing is the guy is nuts, he don't care about his eye. Cotto was doing his little side to side leg thing going backwards constantly, whenever Margarito connected it hurt him...

Forget the eye, Margarito I think was looking to stop within 2 rounds, Cotto looked in trouble

 

There is no way in hell cotto was gonna be stoped by one eye margarito.
Cotto was real smart in that fight and i didnt saw that he was hurt unlike first fight.
I gave margarito maybe one round in that fight(being generous as well) and i have watched the last round now,he didnt do nothing except come forward,miss a lot and threw a small punches from the clinch,and he got tagged a lot.

 

Haven't watched it since so happy to check it again. I remember Cotto punch output reduced a lot in the last round or 2 and he was in full retreat mode - but you've seen it recently so will have to look again

 

He was always in retreat mode in that fight,best thing he has done.
If he would have stopped hed be a stationary target.This way he was too fast for slow plodding Margarito,but loaded wraps or not that guy was ****ing insane,the heart and the chin.OMG!:bbb

Cotto certainly improved for the Margo rematch, but Margarito himself was clearly past his best, with only one eye.

Cotto is a strange case, size wise

He's only what, 5'6, 5'7? with a short reach, yet he looked skeletal fighting at 140 and has always had stamina problems.

Had he been able to stay at 140 where he seemed to have his perfect mix of power, speed and aggresion, I think he could have carved out a career for himself as a great, but he just couldn't make the weight any longer, he still had some good performances at WW but he wasn't quite the same fighter

He's also been far to left-hand dependant throughout his career, and his habit of fading down the stretch gave him problems against 12 round fighters

 

Yes, but earlier in the fight Cotto was also catching him with good shots,using his jab well as he was backing up, hence putting some rounds in the bank, but that output disappeared in the last round or 2 and he was approaching "Just survive to the end of the fight" mode and stopped throwing effectively which made Margarito grow in confidence, he was starting to stalk Cotto rather than chase him - but like I said, that's how I remember it so will watch again
