If I had to guess at it because it can really depend on the boxer, I think in general my favorites are the ones who fire back with a whole combo. It just gives off the 'Im here to fight' type of vibe.

James Toney easy. Defensive wizard with incredible offense, punching technique and flow

Whitaker for me, his ability to stand in the pocket and just be untouchable, sometimes even putting himself back into corners just so he could keep making guys miss was mind boggling. In a way his defence was also offensive and he drained fighters by making them miss him over and over again.

Toney was great to watch too because of how he'd punish opponents with the counter fight hand for missing.

Valuev/Ustinov/Wach obviously have the most fun to watch defense in boxing - non-existant

But as far as effective defense, I agree with @Brighton bomber - Pernell Whitaker and James Toney had eye-pleasing defense, you'd really enjoy to watch it. Also Chris Byrd. His defensive moves were beautiful

I love watching fighters who display an effective and varied defensive whilst on the front foot.

    Duran obviously
    Napoles
    Chavez
Wilfredo Gomez could be very good in this respect.

As for cute defensive specialists, I usually prefer fluid, smooth upper body and head movement types.

    Happy Lora
    Sumbu Kalambay
Ralph Dupas (offensively he lacked a bit of finesse but tricky fighter)
    Benitez could do it all.

I like Joey Archer too but he is a more of a no frills fleet footed outside fighter.

Guys like Duran and Toney who stay on the inside and slip shots while making the opponent pay.

JMM. I loved watching him counter guys with hard combinations.
Calzaghe loved how he could put the punches together, unorthodox, but it worked.
Floyd was a joy to watch when countering as was Toney
Miguel Cotto could box and brawl
Sergio Martinez had a very unusual ambush style of fighting but he had success with it.
