I don't consider Johnson or Louis as under 200 although both were close in the early parts of their careers ... I'd pick both over Rocky ...

Under 200 I like both Dempsey and Tunney. Possibly Corbett in a 15 round bout. A pick em with Fitz, a killer long forgotten and under rated here ...

The closest thing rocky fought to tunney stylistically (fast fleeted boxer with a very low gaurd lean back style with sharp 1-2s and straight punches) was 81-3 harry kid mathews......and rocky exploited mathews low gaurd and lean back flaw with 2 short left hooks, something he will capitalize on tunney.

I favaour Marciano over Tunney, but i'm not particularly confident in that pick. Tunney has bloody good feet and Marciano is not the quickest.

Sam Langford's power would be too much for even Marciano to handle.

Comparing Mathews to Tunney? Understand this, had the reach of a fly weight, and could not match Tunney's footspeed, reach, or jab.

Tunney, unlike Mathews, and other men who Rocky fought, had a top chin.

199 lb. Joe Louis would be the only person I can think of.

how did tunney have a top chin? what 200lb + heavyweights did he fight? what punchers other than a shot jack dempsey did he fight to prove his chin? tunney avoided the best lightheavyweight punchers of his era, and the best heavyweight punchers of his era. to me his chin is unproven

Ps Harry Kid mathews had never been down for the 10 count in 83 bouts prior to the marciano fight, yet ur saying he wasnt durable?

Werent u the one who said reach is overated? after all jimmy bivins has a longer reach than vitali klitschko despite being 10" shorter in height. The key is rocky had leverage and knew how to get his short arms inside and use as extra torque in his punch.

Rocky didnt need to match tunneys footspeed reach or jab, all he needs to do is stalk tunney down and systematically break him down and capitilize on tunneys low gaurd and lean back style

I think it is debatable if Tunney actually had a better chin than Matthews. Marciano was the only man to put Matthews down for the count. He was stopped by Eddie Booker on cuts, and retired with a back injury against Don Cockell. Marciano and Dempsey aside, Matthews faced more good punchers and more big heavyweights than Tunney. Bob Murphy, Danny Nardico, and Al Hostak were by reputation top punchers, and behind them were dangerous men such as Lloyd Marshall and Rex Layne. Other than Dempsey, only Carpentier on Tunney's resume was any sort of puncher at all. Tunney was not in the ring with any top black fighters, nor the best white lightheavy punchers such as Berlenbach, Stribling, or Delaney. His rep for whiskers pretty much rests on the Dempsey fights.

Greb was a great fighter but certainly not a great puncher.

I would have a hard time favouring many sub 200 pounders over Marciano.

I might bet on Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson but wouldnt care to.

If we are asking who could beat him on the day then a lot of names come to mind.
