Hopkins is pretty well known for throwing a good lead punch into a clinch to nullify offense, but Pascal is obviously a very strong kid, and he was pretty vicious in the clinch with Chad Dawson. I don't think it's a good idea for Hopkins to spend too much time clinched up with pascal, so what do you think Hopkins strategy will be? In the late rounds of the Pascal-Dawson fight Chad used the left hook to counter pascal's straight right, and did it extremely effectively. Is Hopkins going to be looking to counter-punch with Pascal?
What tactic will he use? All of them. He knows all the tricks of the game and will have to pull them all out to have a chance. He will definitely be clinching with Pascal a lot of the night, maybe throwing in a headbutt here, a low blow there when the ref is not looking... But none of his tricks will win him this fight IMO. Too past his prime.. not quick enough.. not busy enough.. and he's in Pascal's backyard. Hopkins will have to hurt Pascal early and often to even think about winning a decision tonight.
He's going to clinch 76 times. He's going to fake getting hit by a low blow 3 times. He's going to fake getting hit by a rabbit punch 2 times.
good article man, i think bernard hopkins will try use the jab this fight much more than has been the case, not saying it will work not saying it wont, you learn over time to expect anything with bernard.
I think bhop hop will rely on his usual effective clean hitting (that he has emplooyed in recent years) to defeat pascal. However, due to the fact he has been unofortunate in the taylor and calzaghe fights as the judges were influenced by the crowd or something else and he got the short end of the stick in those fights, i expect him to come forward more ala the pavlik fight and he will shake pascal up several times in this fight. he actually looked quite good and sharp versus jones but due to the knock out clause jones stayed on the back foot the whole time and used everything he has to not get hit its a good question
Headbutt, clinching, holding, conning the ref etc - will only delay the inevitable He'll be crawling around the apron yelping like a lame old sow by the ninth. Stopped by the tenth. Hopefully he'll retire afterwards, its getting silly now
At this point in his career the only thing that stands out to me about Hopkins' offense is how he propels at his opponents with the top of his head like RamMan from He-Man. The right hand that accompanies his head is only a secondary threat. After he head-dives he clinches. The ref breaks them up and he does it again and again. I hate watching him fight.
Kelly Pavlik would say you were wrong. As would Calzaghe who was nailed by that right all night and didnt want a rematch in his home town infront of 60000 of his fans and chose to retire instead.
African-American society would be completely different today if that man, or MLK, lived a few years longer. At the very least, a black man may have become president by the 80s, rather than in the 21st century. :bart
I saw the same stuff against Calzaghe. Pavlik is the only exception. Sure, he doesn't to it 100% of the fight but he does it enough to get on my nerves and stand out to me as the highlight of his arsenal.
