- Coming in too heavy - Trying to trade with Joyce rather than using movement to outbox him. If Parker had to take over the peak version of Joyce, do you think he could win with a more defensive approach? Not the current Joyce but the peak version pre Zhang.
He tried to move, Joyce dragged him into a Dog fight. Whyte did the same thing and beat Parker. Even Chisora beat him
Parker was sick, actually went to the hospital a week or two before the fight. So they couldn't actually implement their proper gameplan. Parker realised this after the first round when he was feeling gassed already, so just tried to bang Joyce out of there as soon as possible and we saw the result. Coming into the fight in that condition, I am not sure there is much Parker could have done differently to win the fight. But Joyce did throw 800+ plus punches in 10 rounds, most of them heavy handed as well. And there is not many fighters who could win in that scenario against a 6'6 270lbs tank if they can't KO him. He threw an average of 95+ punches from round 6 onwards or something ludicrous. Parker's best chance would have been to pot shot and move with sharp counters to keep Joyce honest, but even then, pre-Zhanh Joyce was a legit monster.
I have gone through being sick a couple of weeks before competing. First week back in the gym I really, really struggled. Second week I got better with each passing day, and during the Thursday practice I felt really good, great even! And then on Saturday during the warmup for my fight I felt that something was not quite right. But it was too late to do anything about it and I had to fight. Got my head pummeled because I ran out of steam during the first round - my engine was shot.
Sometimes after fights, the excuses come rolling out. In hindsight, he wasn't at his best physically, as seen from his work since with Andy Lee
Joyce wasn't a monster, he was always crap and limited and was protected for many years fighting no hopers and shot names. It was the most obvious thing they were guarding him. If you weren't his size you could beat him with very good boxing skills or a big punch since he had no defence. If you were his size and had a punch and some skills, Zhang showed what happens. Zhang himself isn't that great, he was also protected for copious years, even more than Joyce. Parker isn't a great boxer and doesn't have great power, so lost. He had no real advantages. Actually you don't even need very good boxing because Chisora actually beat Joyce. I guess he's just a better boxer than Parker. Parker is also fat, and was fatter than Joyce which is another reason why Joyce has a better engine. If Parker had discipline and was around 230lbs, he would be better, but he'll never be able to do that especially now. Actually Chisora is also fat, so that excuse doesn't work so well either. Turns out chisora is actually better than Parker, this is scary stuff. I think Parker always loses to him except the very early Parker who wasn't so fat, maybe he could run around like he did against AJ and sneak rounds. I think he should rematch Joyce though and let's see. Joyce's problem now is age more than Zhang KO'ing him. Joyce v AJ is also still a funny fight where somebody gets face planted.
