Edit - after reflection, this thread is disrespectful to this fighter and is not a fair assessment of them.
In 2017, Hughie had a rough time. He got busted for PEDs, along with his cousin Tyson, who later spilled the beans about Hughie and Peter working with David Haye at the gym - like the mental midget that he is. Then Tyson conveniently 'retired' to hide his PED use and shady deals with a local pig farmer (to try and bribe his way out of the failed PED case). After the fallout with Tyson and their doping scandal, Hughie sort of vanished. Maybe it was because of Tyson's ties with the Kinahan family or his legal troubles regarding the PED case. This was largely dictated by Hughie so he was silenced during this time. Either way, Hughie got screwed over by Tyson's exit. With his ongoing health issues, possibly worsened by what they suspect was long COVID, Hughie's been through the wringer. It's sad to see him betrayed by his family and his health problems...I doubt we'll see him in the ring again, and honestly, I'm okay with that.
Tough fighter to get excited about, but he had some good attributes (chin, defense). There's definitely worse fighters out there making a good living. I'm not sure he's any worse than Wallin.
I will be honest I am glad he is gone. Usually I like scientific boxing, but the style his dad taught him is too cautious to be effective on any high level. He just represents no threat whatsoever, so a good opponent who can punch at all is always going to have a certain advantage. You have to at least have the power to keep an opponent honest.
Correct but about 6 and a half years apart. When Parker beat Hughie, Wilder was about 31 years old and undefeated. When Parker beat Wilder he was 38 and had already been to war with Fury 3 times.
Can't say I miss him. Wasn't it like Peter Fury abandoned Tyson to focus on training Hughie? Then I guess with Tyson gone, the motivation and discipline fell apart. Looks like Peter Fury is now.... training some rando 6'8" guy Matty Harris? Okay then. I guess Hughie is done.
Well, people forget that one of the biggest challenges he faced was after taking the Pulev eliminator fight that Whyte ducked (because it was in Bulgaria and Hearn couldn't get the judges on his side or arrange the double eliminator trick they did with Povetkin). After that brave performance, where he was actually very aggressive because he got that massive cut early on, Peter declared that Hughie's style was garbage and he had to completely change it because it didn't work at top level. This was news to Hughie, who had in fact been trained from childhood by Peter, and to make matters worse, he probably first heard about it by watching the YT interview in question. So Hughie had to go back to the drawing board and that's obviously pretty hard when you're an established fighter and your coach is a fraud, but also your dad so you have to stay with him or Christmas gets super awkward.
