The fine line he was able to cross at a moment's notice...from poetry in motion..the catlike grace of his boxing and dancing to the red, raw meat of his power, his vast arsenal of punches and that killer instinct that he had. All this was complemented by his ruggedness and great resiliency.
The first fighter is Charley Fusari, who Saw at MSG...It was commonly known at the time, that Ray Robinson "carried " Fusari for 15rds in 1950.You can hear the crowde booing Robinson... The next fighter shown with Ray is Bobo Olsen...And the other clip is young Robinson in 1941 at the age of 20,boxing the tough lightweight Sammy [the clutch ]Angott, who was the fighter who broke Willie Pep's win streak in 1943....
yeah most people foucus on his elegance and dancing around, but never fail to mention that he was a rough fighter on par with Greb in terms of his fiereceness in the ring, he was very aggressive. the photos show this in a way. Now who's gonna help find that film?
Sorry lads, nah it's just a video on youtube, me and McGrain were discussing it on here one time, the way he looked mean in his face. I'll see if i can find it now.
Was it this one? (near the end of the vid when he's badly ****ing him up) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2ZO9X7c98c&feature=fvw[/ame] i'm not sure, maybe i looked into it a bit too much, sorry about the anti-climax guys, haha(my fault if so)
I rate robinson. you have to since he beat great fighters, you dont get beter than robinson I just think over the entire history there are others who qualify even if they made less impact. Ray is a legend, I accept that. hes on par with anything.
Robinson is one of the best, but best of all time like always is up for debate. Langford, Armstrong, Greb, Canzi, Ross, Gans, B Leonard, Fitz, and perhaps a few others do have at least a arguement to be over Robinson.
I do rate him as the best, the best I know anything about at least and I'm certainly not as knowledgeable as some of you guys-not close. What it is about Robinson for me is that he was so good an all rounder. He really didn't have any weaknesses at all and I can't think of another fighter off the top of my head who I can say that about. He had great power in both hands, a great jab, great footwork, great punch variety, a great chin, great heart, very good/great speed and he had very solid fundamentals and was smart...can't think of any other factors or I would carry on. I can say Roy Jones was faster so was Leonard, Mayweather, locce and whittaker to name just a few were better defensively and so on but I can pick flaws with all of those guys and probably anybody else I can think of, I can't with Robinson. Every aspect of his game was at least a 7 out of ten.
It's a shame that we'll probably never find out how good Greb looked on film, unless his fight with Walker or Tunney turn up somewhere. :?
