Gonna join a boxing gym soon. Have been wanting to box in the offseason of football for the last 3 years, but I've had major knee surgeries all 3 of those years. However, this last knee surgery wasn't as bad, so I'll be better soon, meaning I'll actually be able to join after Jan. 9 (after Christmas break for my college). What should I expect to do my first day and my first week, and even my first month of training? Yes, obviously I know I should try and get in shape before going.
Depending on your level of fitness, I'd say overall soreness is going to be normal until your body gets use to the routines. Since this is your first venture into a boxing gym, don't expect to be climbing in the ring for a while for sparring unless you show the trainers something special. Football shape and boxing shape are worlds apart as far as fitness is concerned. If you follow boxing, I'm sure you've seen ex-NFL players take to the ring thinking they could compete, only to be embarrassed beyond belief. Boxing is hard on the knees so I hope you don't have much trouble with them. You'll find out soon enough.
If you spar you will find out you aren't the strongest, you aren't the fastest, and you aren't a good fighter. Good luck mate that is what I learned.
Who spars within the first week of joining a gym? It's lots of hitting the mitts/heavybag and shadowboxing, that's for sure, but sparring? That seems counter-productive to me. The only time I've seen sparring that early on is when some bozo, who has had prior "martial arts" training, comes in to show off. But they usually get their ass handed to them and most of them never come back.
Expect a lot of mental and physical pain from a level of training that no other sport can replicate. How you react to that will determine whether you go back the next week!!!
I'll go back no matter what...I don't quit, even if it's hard as ****, because I know I'll get better each time I go.
Sparred on the first day, was way out of my comfort zone and just had punches reigning at me, it wasn't that fun but i guess you learn that you do take your beatings but you take something from each one and build on it to improve
Depending on the gym you'll either do nothing but fitness and technique for the first few weeks, maybe even months or after your first few sessions you'll get thrown into the ring. Expect a lot of soreness either way. and when you go you'll find that you are not anywhere near as good as you felt when you shadowboxed in the mirror
Some people think that this is bad as it scares away newcomers but I am of the opinion that it is the best way. You need to have that something extra in you to want to box, that mental toughness and thats the best way to find out. If they come back you at least have an idea if they can stick it out.
