A more recent fighter who sprung to mind for me is Danny Williams.

Didn't his wife bring charges against him? He def. had to got to court in America for it with a Yank girlfriend after the Robinson rematch as well.

That was in the days of "I'm in great shape and I'm going to try my best" interviews, Very scripted...;)

edit: please don't think I'm having a pop at Turpin but having read a bit about him, the shagging and the odd domestic scuffle are parts of his story.

Ray Robinson even back then, has allot of swagger.......in my shades, and with his manerisms.

This is of a time, when black people where still getting lynched.

Yep, Clay came along a few years later and completely changed that side of the sport. Even Robinson in that interview is stilted and doing it "by the numbers" and he was apparently a real character outside the ring.

Even someone like Robinson was still just saying nice things about the opponent, the UK, the usual BS in that interview. You don't get anything of the "real" Robinson or Turpin from those interviews.

his wife brought charges against him and got custody of randy junior which affected the always emotional fighter and resulted in at 2 of his losses.women were always his achilles heel.
the american girl, adelle daniels , dropped the charges against the licker.
there were rumours at the time that it was a set up or a sort of honey trap to upset turpin's state of mind.

randy was the first black britain to win a world title and his brother dick was the fisrt black fighter to gain from the lifting of the colour bar after the war.
both brothers had fought in the war and his 2 sisters were in the WAAF's, randy being too young.randy's father had died when the young licker was 2 in 1930 from the effects of being gassed in the 1st world war.

there was still food rationing in this country when turpin beat robinson in 1951 and as it was only 6 years after the war their was an immense feeling of patriotism.there was a crowd of 18,000 at earls court london to cheer turpin on and millions listening on the radio.

a film about turpin...................a brilliant idea
