I've seen people call Kessler, Wlad, Lewis etc. technicians. they couldn't be further off the mark.

    anyone got a name?

    Cervantes
    Monzon
    Harold Johnson
    Pone Kingpetch
    Benvenuti
    Cokes
    Ohba
    Winstone
    Sibson

etc, those are some of the more obviously identifiable outside jabbers, but i think quite a lot of fighters start things off or move from an upright stance that could be easily be considered standup boxers. Some who you might not expect.

But yes, someone who can do little other than stay outside and work a jab isn't the ideal image of a technician, someone like Kessler might be best defined as a decent basic textbook fighter;certainly not advanced or indepth in style...Wlad can barely even counterpunch.Just avoid those stiff types like Tom Bogs who couldn't slip a punch if their lives depended on it.

    that's a pretty solid list.

Is Sibson referring to Tony Sibson??

anyhow, I agree for the most part. Harold Johnson for one can look quite stiff at times but has actually good head movement.

Forgot about Buchanan, he might actually be one of the better examples of an upright outside jabbing fighter who i'd consider a good technician, but actually does a lot of odd/wrong things from a textbook perspective.Very distinctive footwork and defensive choices there.

I could watch Buchanan all day. You're right, there are mistakes from a fundamental point of view. Like a lot of great fighters, he seemed comfortable enough that he could afford to duck sharply at the waist or walk round his opponent within range, but the application of his punches was superb, and his opponents had a hard time catching him with clean returning shots.

Why are Wlad and Lewis not outside technicians? They most certainly are/were..

what technician does not know how to infight? to me, Lewis looked most like a technicians against Mercer, but that stuff doesn't compare to what we see in the lower weights

lewis was great on the inside. most of his best wins where in the pocket.
grant,holyfield,mavrovic,mercer,akinwande....but henry wanted no part of,mason, vitali, mccrory(ok small but still didnt **** about),tucker, morrison,

he was so long even for a heavy. that there was no reason to

im not saying lewis is a great technician. it looks like the feet don't know what the torso is doing sometimes...he is a lummox and doesnt have the sort of precision you would expect. but knows what he is doing and had all the tools available. could bust on the inside.

he set good traps aswell. i dont know man what are you saying? that lewis wasnt good enough technician. then what was he?

I think you can be a technician and not be a good infighter. I agree Lewis was not a great infighter but overall he was a good technician just not a complete fighter to the fullest extent of the word.

I don't really agree, but that's just a matter of defintion so it's not of that much importance.

A more interesting question is how you would compare Wlad and Lewis to for example Ali in terms of technical skill. What say you?

All three men are excellent text-book technicians.

Fighters like Ali, Walcott, Calzaghe, and Roy Jones for example are actually unorthdox fighters who broke away from conventions to maximize their athletic and reflex advantages.

Lewis was devestating on the inside, maybe his close-range work wasn't the prettiest, but he sure was dangerous.
