what upright outside jabbers were actually good technicians?

Good picks and good post, but I disagree on Monzon.

Ali was obviously a more well rounded or complete fighter, but technically in their areas of expertise I dont think Ali threw technically better jabs and right hands than either Wlad or Lewis. Ali was obviously faster and didnt hit as hard, but technically speaking Lewis and Wlad are very good a delivering their punches comparably speaking. Like you said, I think its more of how someone defines or interprets the thread starters question.

Yeah. In the case of Lewis, I'd say his biggest flaw was his footwork. He could lose balance and poise when pressed and also tended to retreat in straight lines. He and Wlad don't get a very high rating when it comes to head movement either. But their punching technique is quite alright.

Lewis himself he didn't like in fighting and he wasn't much of a short hooker, devastating uppercut though ofcourse

Of course he's a good technician, though not necessarily a stylish, slick or elegant one.A great one? well people seem able to argue about that all day and obviously he's not a 90-100% textbook man, but not many fighters are.

Not for me. Great timing. The way I see Monzon is that he has great timing with his jab and right cross, and hooks, at his best he looks to keep you on the end of this type of assault and battery, if a fighter rushes him or tries to get inside he usually batters them with hooking type shots until they back off because of the sheer strength of the attack. If you want to call him a good technician on the strength of him being a great ring general then that's fine, i'm going to respectfully disagree.

His timing, control of distance and intelligent use of his textbook shots(without being hidebound to convention here)are parts of what makes him a good technician though Teeto.Good footwork and balance even if it is awkward looking at times.

I'd even call other upright guys like Morales and Marquez-both of whom i've criticised a lot and don't rate nearly as highly as Monzon- good technicians for mostly similar reasons.

And Monzon has that steely ice filled stare.

I think Morales could be a bit too sloppy with his defense and footwork to qualify as a technician.

Morales is much more clinical with his precision up close though, he is actually a good technician, though flawed in his defence, and heavily. Marquez has not too great footwork too. Obviously it is difficult to be perfect. For me Monzon is lacking in too many areas technically for me to label him a good technician. Like I said before, I rate Monzon as one of the best ring generals in history. I also think Vitali Klitschko is a fine ring general, but one of the worst technicians i've ever seen in my life. Each to their own mate.
