i wasn't born during that time so i can be wrong but i've read somewhere(don't remember where) that robinson's manager was really insulting him by giving him the name "sugar" because his style early in his career was based on keeping distance, and back pedaling so they called his style "sweet". i don't know how true that is, but ray leonard also had a style that's based distance and back pedaling. i also read that they gave him the name sugar because he was just that damn good "sweet as sugar". someone explain. where's the ATG ESB poster burt bienstock or mcvey when you need him? :?

Ask "Jake Lamotta' if he is still living. Lamotta said he got diabetes from fighting SRR so many times.

Early in his career a woman in a NY audience said he was "sweet as sugar" after one of his bouts and the name stuck. Ray was never just a back peddler, even in the amateurs he scored 40 1st round ko's and it continued though his whole career.
