http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqQZ...owthread.php?t=139808&feature=player_embedded What was all this about..... I'm pretty dissapointed with Buncey, all boxers have to make there cash. Unfortunatly Dawson doesn't have the support of a whole country like Joe did..... does it really make him not worthy of fighting Joe
I guess he was making the point that Dawson has eff all fan base, which is true. Apart from the fact that he seems to have HBO on board, Dawson brings very little to the table. Excellent fighter that he is, he's a fully paid up member of the Paul Williams who needs him club. Dawson-Tarver II is a stinker. I'm struggling to recall a more needless rematch.
I think the point Buncey is making is that Dawson isnt a big enough name in the sport for Calzaghe to fight him. I dont think he's disrespecting Dawson's ability
Like I said if Dawson came from a country where his biggest competition for fans is Enzo Macaranelli he might have a bigger fanbase..... Buncey just sounds like a fanboy in this vid
Bunce accused JoeCal of stabbing setanta in the back during the same show! (for announcing his retirement to BBC rather than Setanta, who had been paying his bills)
dont really see the point in this rant by buncey everyone knows dawson hasnt caught the publics imagination and if he feels that is a good reason that joe didnt fight him then im a little dissapointed as i personally reckon it would have been a great little fight but neither fighter should be discredited for it not happening, all this joe never fought him and this guy ducked joe is getting a bit ott the guy fought nearly 46times won 46times and is now RETIRED and good bloody luck to him i hope he enjoys it, it was well earnt
Bunce always seems to look at fights from a money making perspective imo thats what i don't like. Although if you look at it that way thats the way most fights happen. Dawson is a big risk little reward fight for Calzaghe although it would add another good name to the resume. 46-0 plus millions or 46-1 and a bit more
Joe C fought 2 light heavyweights, one of which had the 'ring' belt which has no mandatory challenge based on ranking, and the other was known to be well past his sell by date - a fact aknowledged by JC 3 years earlier in his biography. On this basis JC was universaly proclaimed as the number 1 at the weight. I would say that the undefeated holder of LH belts who has beaten far more LH opponents than Joe has had every right to challenge him, whether he looked up to the job or not - and whether he has a big fan base or not. Unfortunately a 'deserving' match up is about much money the fight can generate and not the natural challenger in terms of championship status within that weight.
I was going to make a thread about this exact same thing. I love Bunces show and most of what he says but i completely disagree with this. His Calzaghe nuthugging has got to stop. Its this way of thinking that hurts the sport. I understand its a business rah rah rah but boxing needs people who are going to support whats right in the sport. If Calzaghe had not retired, it would have been wrong for him to have fought anyone other the Dawson. Fan base or not Dawson was clearly the Number 1 challenger for Calzaghe and he called Joe out in a few interviews RESPECTFULLY. For being the rightfully earned Number 1 Challenger and respectfully asking Joe for a fight before he retired, this is cause for Bunce to rip him? Your ****ing kidding Bunce!
A strange rant. Dawson is a very good fighter and he was perfectly entitled to ask Calzaghe for a fight, just as Calzaghe had every right to retire when he did.
The fact that he's fighting Tarver in a rematch by contract, a fight that no one wants to see -may have something to do with the numbers.
