I've never seen the guy fight but I know many say he's the goat at middleweight so what made him a special fighter?

    Always calm under fire.

Bennie Briscoe scored a crunching right during their 1972 bout. Rodrigo Valdez briefly floored Carlos in 1977. In both cases he quickly got himself back together. You won't see any skirting around the ring or desperate clinching. Monzon had a commanding presence, methodically thumping opponents into the loser's bracket.

    Best skill? The ol’ 1-2.

Best attribute? Tougher question. He had a few very important ones that, when combined were the bedrock of his greatness.

A great judge of range. He could sit just outside punching range, drawing leads, and only move into range when he was ready to work.
Monzon also seemed to know how he was doing in a fight. When he could take a breather and when he needed to turn up the wick.

I think his best skill was that he was always in perfect control of the fight. And when he wasn't, he didn't fluster, he just worked his magic until he was again.

Aside from the great posts already made,....I'd say his great punch selection/placement and accuracy...best attribute was his supreme ring IQ.

I think Monzon like several greats was a sum of many parts. Top tier jab, booming right behind it and he followed up those two with a left hook or uppercut. Very responsible defensively too
But what makes him special to me is his pressure and focus, he put so much pressure on someone and never got too excited or flustered as @Ted Spoon said. He was locked to his target and he kept on pressuring you while being undeterred by what was coming back at him.
He also forced you to fight at his prefered range and pace by controlling distance with the jab and discouraging momentum with the uppercuts and his well disguised right.

He’s probably the best ever at using his height and reach to his advantage

He was basically one of the best nullifiers in history.

Many people aren’t impressed with him, especially at first.

So, watch his fights against the opponents you know and respect most, and don’t focus on him. Focus on them. Why were things going wrong for them? When did it begin? They seemed to start off the fight just like they always did. Why are they now getting thrashed?

Easiest way to discern what made Monzon great.
