That was a good toe-to-toe slugfest, though a little one-sided till the stoppage. Takam was really busting Chisora up and making him look average in there till that ridiculous turnaround. Wouldn't mind seeing it again, to be honest. Takam's one of those hard luck guys that never seems to catch a break, it seems.
That was easily the most dramatic edge-of-your-seat fight this year, though not really competitive for much of its length. Round twelve was probably ROTY though. Just insane stuff.
Rewatched Saucedo vs Lenny Z. Rounds 3 and 4 were great. You got a knockdown and blood, but it didn't last long enough and it ended bad.
Neeco Macias and Jesus Soto Karass attempt to answer the age old question: How many arm punches can you throw over ten rounds? This was awful. Not one meaningful punch thrown. Probably the only time they hurt each other is when their heads clashed. Macias doesn’t beat you up he molests you. This reminds me of Ray Oliveira vs Zack Padilla where they had over 3,000 punches thrown but none of them mattered either. They might as well have been boxercizing. Micky Ward’s fight with Antonio Diaz had half the output but much better punch quality and was way more exciting. Henry Armstrong used to set that kind of pace but his punches would **** you up. You know who had an entertaining swarmer style? In Jin Chi. His fight with Michael Brodie was much better than this. The way that they stay in one corner the whole fight reminds me of Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1. This was textbook how you make a boring action packed fight. Like a 30 minute game of patty cake. I'm inclined to dub this a sluglessfest. Also, since phone booths have gone the way of the dodo, maybe we should think about renaming fights that happen at this range. Cubicle quarrels? Bus stop battles? Struggling in a shower stall? Sortie on a submarine? Clash in a coffin? Carnage in a closet? Assault in an air duct? Hostility in a helicopter? Pugilism at a peepshow? Bust up in a bank vault?
GGG vs Canelo 2 The build up.The drama. The action. The controversy. The the boxer/counter puncher walks forward all night throwing tremendous body shots. The knockout artist boxes masterfully behind boxing's most accurate and head snapping power jab. 12 rounds of high class action with as many as 8 rounds able to go either way. This was the PPV that restored faith in mega-fights after years of Mayweather's minimal action PPVs. In The aftermath we were (and still are) talking about boxing. I got so sick of hearing about Mayweather's money. I personally haven't felt so excited watching a mega fight since Pacman's trilogies with Mexican future HOFers.
Probably Gvozdyk vs Stevenson for me. It was really competitive and could have gone either way. Spectacular finish too, save for the trauma.
Just saw Chisora vs Takam. Those heavyweights are too slow, and their lack of technical variety early on made the fight monotonous. It got more interesting later on when Chisora laid on the ropes playing opossum waiting for Takam to tire. But it's no fight of the year.
You must be high. There was no action. Gvozdyk just peppered Stevenson at range for the first 9 rounds.
Wilder Fury. Historic fight of two great HWs. Perfect example of boxer vs puncher, in fact, one of the single greatest examples of high level boxer vs high level puncher mostly evenly matched in terms of their own strengths that has ever happened. And to top it off, quite possibly the single greatest example of punch recovery ever. Easily FOTY but the high negatives Wilder has (sometimes deservedly) developed will stop it from being the consensus choice that it deserves to be.
After all the talk about Gassiev vs Dorticos I have to sit through eleven rounds of middle of the road action with no knockdowns, momentum changes, cuts, or guys getting rocked to get one good final round. I'm sifting through all the fights in this thread and each one's more disappointing than the next.
Loads of great fights this year, great year for boxing fans. Always a danger picking a later fight that it's just the fresher one in the memory, but my pick is Frampton vs Warrington nonetheless. I think it had everything, a clash of styles, experience versus relative youth, a well thought out tactical plan executed flawlessly and respect from both parties shown throughout.
I really disagree with this one. The fight lacked punch output, and punches landed in particular. Its tough to argue an exciting or "edge of your seat" fight if there are 25 punches throw per round on average with 5-10 landing. It was exciting if either (or both) of the fighters are close to your heart, I get it. Its like watching your national team in the championship finale, no matter how boring the match its exciting because we want our team to win. If one is more neutral about either man it was quite a boring affair for most rounds.
