What was Gerry C00ney's best win?

The body shot he hit lyle with was clean and beautiful, although against a shot opponent.. The norton fight wasn't pretty, he had Ken trapped in the corner and was still missing some of his shots. Ugly performance though devastating..

 

In later years the alcohol got the best of him

 

This goes against the grain on this forum, but to me his most impressive fight was Dennis. But Dennis is also a guy that not only stands in front of you, he'll try backing you up. that certainly plays into Gerry's strength.

but he got the result over a tough guy, but don't fool yourself about the bout either--Al Braverman would throw his guys in with anyone for a dollar. Maybe even a quarter. Other guys don't take the fight. Braverman is the polar opposite of Gerry's corner and management when it came to opponent selection.

If you take a hard look at things, consider the other up and coming prospects from that 76 to 78 timeframe. Then, look at who promoted them. Who managed them & who was training them. The management was very fortunate that MSG was doing a lot of shows at the time and broadcasting them. It wasn't as if they were taking their act on the road. Or fighting the other up and comers.

He didn't even take on his contemporary nyc guy, Renaldo Snipes. Why not? The bout sells & instead it was a guy like Snipes getting his big shot before ****ey. And that should not have happened that way.

 

Lyle and Norton also but Norton´s chin was not the best as we know.

except Luis Ortiz because i think Ortiz is too tough.

 

I always felt the Jimmy Young fight was his best. Jimmy was doing quite well at the time and ****ey did not go the banger route on Jimmy. I was so impressed with the way he stuck with the plan, ripped Jimmy to pieces with the jab and stopped him in 4, that I really believed he had a great shot at Holmes. I felt his great and underutilized jab was completely missing in the Holmes fight, but what can you do? Getting back to the question, the Jimmy Young fight was the most impressive to me.

 

I would say the ko of Young was his best win, though Young would have likely been more competitve and gone the distance if not cut.

Young was not really shot, like Lyle and Norton were.

Norton was the fight where he looked most impressive, but Norton had a problem with big punchers even earlier in his career, and was anyway way past his prime.

Brown had a good record but hadn't fought anyone
Gregg had already been stopped by James Broad
Chaplin was a few years past his prime.

He wasn't really that competitive in the Holmes fight. The scoring really was closer than what it should have been accoriding to reports of the time.

Weaver and Witherspoon gave Holmes a togher time than ****ey.

 

Norton. Rappaport and Jones knew what they were doing financially to get ****ey over. Shame they hurt his potential as a fighter. Probably knew that Page and Dokes could beat him as well.

 

I think he might have been better had he stayed busier, fought some better guys and was more dedicated to the sport.. But in the long run they did him a favor. He retired young, healthy, wealthy, and with a respectable record. He's had a good life. Certainly a much better one than Jerry Quarry.

 

Young for pure skills

Lyle and Norton for power and finishing ability.

Although he did not beat Holmes C00ney likely won 4-5 rounds and had Holmes hurting at times.

C00ney best win would have been to fire his promoters.

 

I remember a few months after this fight, Larry stating that he was passing blood for a couple of weeks after the fight.
Another line I remember, is Holmes talking about his forthcoming fight with Mike Spinks stating "How can this kid hurt me? I've been punched round the head by monsters like Earnie Shavers, Ken Norton and Gerry C00ney"

 

Jimmy Young. Young wasn't shot. He had just won "comeback of the year" or something like that. And I also don't like the "if it weren't for the cut" arguments. ****ey was doing well and putting a beating on Young in the last round.

 

They did fine managing him. He was one of the highest paid contenders of all time.

 

Agreed. And more importantly he escaped boxing with his health in tact, unlike so many who don't. It makes me sad to hear about fighters who are disabled and financially broke. It seems C00neys people did right by him and he was able to keep most of the money he made and isn't in bad health today unless there's something I don't know.
