I thought Jorge Luis Gonzalez would turn out to be much more than what he was. Not exactly an all time great or anything but at least a major player....
I have to admit that I backed Maccarinelli against Haye. Macca had been steadily improving and looked fantastic against Braithwaite whilst Haye had been down when clipped against Mormeck. The doubts about Haye making the weight also influenced my opinion.
I had a few bad ones: Lately Urango to beat Berto. Lacy to KO Calzaghe (basically Lacy to KO everyone after this fight also) Cintron to beat Margo in the 2nd fight. Jones to beat Calzaghe Banks to beat Adamek Malignaggi and Collazo to beat Hatton Katsidis to beat Casamayor (i actually put money on this one) My worst i think was Mayorga to beat DLH I'm sure i have made worse ones but they all come to mind
I was on the A Force train but in my defence I was only 10 or 11 when he turned pro . Remember staying up till around 11pm to watch his pro debut on BBC1.
With hindsight, the fact they made a point in the programme of saying Middleton had a clause in his contract that meant he had to rematch Audley if he won, probably tells you how much confidence his backroom team really had in Harrison......
Once upon a time I genuinely thought "A-Force" Audley Harrison was a genuine prospect. Going back a while I thought Tucker would beat Tyson, Leonard would KO Hearns in their rematch and Micael Nunn was the "Next Big Thing". The only boxers I have ever considered myself to be blinded by fandom towards are Eubank & Lewis and they had pretty good records all told. Right now I'm still picking anyone with good skills and a reasonable dig to beat Amir Khan, so I may set myself up as a hostage to fortune later.
I figured Spinks to beat Tyson :huh I think we all (sadly) figured Leonard was going to flatten Hearns, going into their rematch. And yes pre Barkley, Nunn did look for real. I see nothing wrong with your Leonard/Hearns and Nunn picks, they were common sense..... Now common sense.... that has been held hostage to fortune by boxing for over a century now!
When Michael Nunn blew out Kalambay in what figured to be a snooze of a fight I was a huge fan. There was a lot to like about the way he boxed even if sometimes he was a little too 'safety first'. Then James Toney hit him on the jaw.
I've sparred with Chis Okoh and without him trying he cained me (mind you I am shite) but his so tall and all limbs he moves so well. Can easily see why he was going to look good.
:deal and the same happened with pac fight lol and Lacy to KO Calzaghe thought Calzaghe was **** and the way lacy beat an old reid i thought it was definitly going to be an easy win for him
yup. I'd like to think I would never fall for the hype again though More recently, Oral over Abraham, after seeing him against Simon I thought maybe he really is struggling at the weight. Tarver over Dawson. I can't remember what other fights were on around that one but I think I ended up picking about 4 in a row wrong.
