I wasn't following boxing when Roy lost to Tarver, so what was the shock like when Roy got knocked out? Describe how you personally felt and how the boxing world took it.
I didn't see the fight, but there used to be a bunch of guys across the way from my apartment building who would always watch fights together. I could always hear the commentary, etc., and the reaction when someone got KTFO. On the night of the RJJ v Tarver fight, I was on ESB (iirc) when I heard an uproar of "Oh, Sh*tttttt!!!!!" louder than anything I've heard before or since. It was EPIC. That KO forever changed the way people viewed RJJ. He used to be invincible.
I wasn't surprised. Roy pulled it out to win the first fight, but it was tight enough as to where Tarver was a very live challenger in the rematch.
Very honestly the world felt different. I had watched Roy since the early nineties and I just didn't see him getting one dinked like that. Given the trouble Tarver had given him in fight one a decision loss would have been a bit of a shock but one left hand/ lights out was astonishing. RJ over stayed his welcome and played a naive and egotistical game with his body. The drop to 175lbs, after Ruiz, was akin to taking a walk down the primrose path and he paid the price. Many will tell you Jones was simply not much of a fighter to begin with but they are simply idiots. He was the most gifted fighter who ever lived but he was far too cautious in negotiations and his resume is lacking for that reason.
**** roy jones nobody care about that ***** he ran from joe calzaghe and Dariusz Michalczewski for years they were supposed to be the first the knock him out
Shocked. Roy had so dominated his opponents that is seemed unthinkable. His close fight to Tarver was pretty much written off as a bad night following a weight drop. Yes, Tarver had a style that was hard to look good against, but nobody thought Roy would lose like that. Keep in mind, I didn't really like Roy and was rooting for Tarver in both fights.
Never beeing a big fan, I was happy Tarver won. Was nice to see someone who is so arrogant get humbled a bit. But at the same time, was pretty surprised. Was definitely a "Holy ****!!" moment.
The first fight with Tarver Roy struggled bad and I thought Tarver won, still the KO in the rematch was like someone just shot superman ...just quiet and damn dude damn.
I was in a bar in Clinton Hill, BK. Pro Roy Jones crowd. **** was mad rowdy....then BOOM, deathly silence and looks of drunken bewilderment at the sight of Roy ktfo'ed on the canvas.
I was not that surprised. He avoided strong punchers, and I had wondered for sometime if he lacked confidence in his chin. As it turned out I was probably right. Roy did not plan on his speed and reflexes letting down, unfortunately for him, they did.
