His effort against Rosario was a master class in infighting. I rewatch that one often.

I'd cast another vote for the Rosario fight.

Although, his first win over Mayweather was a total wipeout.

And, later on in his career, the win over Terrence Alli was pretty thorough. I remember that one generating a lot of buzz.

As he had a name, a reputation and it was a superb performance, it probably was Rosario.

But although a much easier fight, indeed basically a nothing fight, I would suggest he looked a bit better still against Aguilar. Indeed he looked superb finishing off Nicky Perez, although I have not seen the whole fight, so that might be it.

In other words I spent two paragraphs saying Chavez was in his pomp in 87/88 at the more comfortable 135lbs.

I wouldnt call the Lockridge fight a "beatdown." Rocky gave him a tough fight.

My favorite Chavez fights were Laporte and Randall I.

Laporte was inspired fighting in front of the NY crowd and gave Chavez all he could handle.

Randall was considered a no hoper in that fight and surprised everyone including Chavez with an excellent display of speed, power, heart and resilency to hand Julio his first OFFICIAL loss.

Holding a prime Whitaker to a draw was pretty amazing stuff for a guy who had peaked a few years earlier.

It was a split decision win for Julio Caesar Chavez Sr on Aug 3 1986, in Monte Carlo, Monaco, it was televised by NBC, Marv Albert was the commentator. i recorded that fight on my Mitsubishi vcr, you are right, very close fight.

I had a National myself. That bad boy saw some content roll through it. My Voltron videos were almost perpetually inside it.

You asked for favorite....Chavez vs Haugan in front of 100,000 taxi drivers in Mexico City. That one tops ANY bout of Canelos in term of fan mania.

    Can I pose a question?

Does early 130 reign Chavez come into the conversation at all?

I've heard some people critique JCC's career there, mostly to question his h2h ability there. That he was to green early on and having issues with making the limit in the latter stages.

Call me crazy if you will but I think those early few fights he was the 130 pound champion were amongst some of his best performances.

He was an absolute destroyer. I'm not sure how Martinez was thought of leading into that fight but he subsequently turned out to be a tough fighter who proved himself against some very good fighters. Julio ripped him to pieces in that fight.

Ruben Castillo is a bloke I think most will be familiar with. Most definitely at the tail end of a hard career but to destroy him so easily is a feat. And I'm fairly certain he was carrying an injury into that fight aswell. An ankle sprain or strain.

Uncle Roger was young and dangerous. Chavez just plowed through him like Andy Ruiz goes through a funnel cake.

And to think that Julio Caesar Chavez Sr was Hector Macho Camacho's mandatory challenger for his WBC World Junior Lightweight Title in 1984, Hector moved up instead of fighting him.
