Louis was not as well prepared for Charles as he might have been because he was coming in off a lay off. Comeback Joe took a beating against Charles who looked another class. However, with a warm up I think unforgiven is right Louis might have been able to make that a closer fight. Remember Charles had a harder time with Beshore than Louis did. Charles was not exactly dominating the era. Ezzard only beat Joey Maxim by hometown majority decision in Cincinnati just before winning the title and he did not knock out Walcott like Louis had.

There is no real evidence there was anything wrong with Louis' right arm. I think it was just harder for him to set up right hands. It's easier to work the jab, at that point Louis was content with that. Why does there have to be a problem with his right hand? Joe certainly decked Agramante with a right hand.

Now Henry is an interesting fighter.

He seems to have been on the cusp of being something special.

I think that you are making this version of Louis out to be a lot more than he was, and nobody is a bigger Louis supporter than I am.

He was beating guys like Brion on points, who you wouldn't have bothered to match with him a few years earlier.

His win over Savold is impressive, but Savold was getting on a bit by then.

He was still world class, but I would submit a level below Charles and Walcott.

I don't mean to exaggerate comeback Louis' ring prowess, I am merely measuring this version against the elite fighters of the day. Knocking out Savold quicker than Marciano and knocking out Beshore quicker than Charles. Going the full distance with Brion is what everyone else was doing. Brion was robbed against Rex Layne, he also took Lastarza close and Charles could not knock Brion out either. Agramonte took Big cat Williams the distance.
why not? Louis defended against Johnny paycheck and Tony Musto. At least Brion knocked out a washed up Tami Mauriello.
he was but Louis having landed that fight did exactly what was required to further his own career at that point against a highly placed contender.
I totally agree. Charles and Walcott are ahead of this. I just think these comeback performances were worthy of making any unknown heavyweight being taken seriously at world level. Because it was Joe Louis people cant get past the comparisons.

Don't worry, I have no time for the Marciano assailants, who want to diminish his win over Louis.

    Thank goodness.

I've just watched both of Louis' fights with Cesar Brion. In The first fight Joe, whilst always in control, appears over economical at times and patient but is not missing. Cesar is a good opponent and Joe contains him, biding his time as if wary of wearing out before the end. He has Brion hanging on at the end when he finally goes to work. It is a very careful defensive performance.

The second fight is so much better. Both seem to have improved. Joe is lighter and sharper. Whilst he is not using combinations of more than two or three punches he is able to beat Cesar to the draw and is more able to predict his leads, finding more space and time. Again Cesar is marked up and again Louis leaves enough in the tank to finish stronger.

Considering Brion is a good current young fighter who was robbed against Layne and held his own with Charles and others, I think this second Cesar Brion fight is Comeback Joe Louis' best win. Checking film of Brion against Layne and Charles I think Louis handles Cesar as well as anyone. Especially the second time.
