Never heard of him called a swarmer. Boxer/puncher w/ a good semblance of skills.

Kimbo shouldn't throw hands with anyone. Sylvia shouldn't have thrown a terrible low kick that even an MMA journeyman would be able to counter with a similar effect. a trained boxer can obviously knock out anyone with ease if they hand them their chin like that.

He was one of those squat iron-chinned slugger types that happened to have a great penetrating jab to go along with it. Basic style, stalk your opponent, push them back with the jab, then unload on them in close. Reminded me a tiny bit of Sonny Liston in that regard.

I certainly thought it could have gone either way at the time. Pivotal moment in Lewis's career.

Mercer was a high intensity, hard working Fighter with a good jab and a high ring IQ. His relative lack of bulk meant he needed a high output to get him into range and keep him there.
Although Ray was capable of spectacular KO's, he couldn't afford to take his time to land the big punch so had to adopt an attritional style.
Whatever tag you want to put on it, he was great to watch.

    Fantastic jab that he underused.

got drawn into brawls where he could have used his skills to win.

lost and drew fights he should have won.

Top 10 ko of all time over tommy Morrison

should have done better than WBO

Mercer and Morrison both underachieved. Some battle that was. Brutal KO and definitely one of the best. On the flip side Morrison landed some of the best HW combinations I've ever seen that fight.

agreed. Was some fight. Mercer I feel was more talented than Morrison and should have achieved more. Don’t know much about his personal life

Mercer seemed to lack dicapline as a civilian is my reading on it (look at the path of destruction Mercer left in the 88 Olympics, he was robbed against Savon too!) He was a blue collar guy who enjoyed fishing and I'm sure he enjoyed grilling and over indulging in what he cooked up. We all know about Morrison's struggles. No need to add to that.

Also think Mercer while being a legitimate force at HW was probably naturally more suited for CW. Imagine a lean, mean and 100% focused Mercer there. Scary thought.
