I was never a fan of the 90s heavyweight scene but your post encouraged me to watch the fight. I realize how much I've been missing. That was a close fight and it made me an instant ray mercer fan. He is a true fighter.

Stalker. Nasty jab when he wanted to use it. Ray was like a modern Sonny Liston with a better chin. Ring IQ was just OK; he was a bit one dimensional- what you see is what you get, but effective nonetheless.
Most of his biggest wins were come-from-behind (Damiani, Morrison). He could've gotten the decision vs Lennox.

To me, it always seemed like Ray's undying faith in his Homer Simpson-esque chin led to him making some fights harder than they had to be. He'd forego defense knowing he could take your best shot.

he really had a brilliant jab. It’s like he just loved fighting too much and forgot he was in a boxing ring.

I watched it the other night and I honestly could not split them. So hard to score. If you simply watched it on the eye test without scoring round by round nobody would complain with a draw

It's not too often you can say a man fell in love with his own chin, but it fit with Mercer. He could've made life easier on himself had he stuck to that great jab of his, but he knew your chin would give out before his did in a dog fight and was more than happy to go there.

Mercer was a skilled guy, particularly with his jab. He had a good right hand and a real killer instinct when his opponent was hurt. His chin was excellent. His mental preparation and physical preparation for fights were issues, and he wasn't that big, quick or fast. A focused and in shape Ray Mercer was a tough man to beat. I'd back him to stop Wilder. Joshua could be 50.50

    Style? Opportunistic slugger

didn't Kimbo Slice die in his 30's??

and yeah, whomever said it, I have Mercer vs Lewis on dvd and no matter how you slice it ... Mercer won that fight!! But of course the favorite gets the decision...

since fights getting cancelled like crazy I guess we can just revert back to our dvd collections!

Homer Simpson-esque chin. Brilliant. This will become normal Boxing speak within 12 months. I am certainly going to use it !

And Kimbo was a guy who started pro fights in his mid-thirties. He had never done MMA before, his street fights were all stand up. And Ray Mercer could do nothing. It just shows that Mercer KO is not proof of anything.

For what it's worth, Kimbo was known to use steroids. That helped him greatly.
