Besides being a dirty fight. Other than that he seems incredibly well rounded in every aspect of the game. He had very quick hands, was impervious to punishment, solid defense, long reach, great sense of rythme, great workrate, and he was probably the hardest puncher at 126-130 all time. If there was any knock in my mind it would be modest foot speed. Thoughts?
Sandy was nearly perfect. Mean, schooled, and determined. Not even foot speed was a weakness. He did well cornering Pep behind the jab/hook and making him fight. I say it is his dirty play. He would be certainly would have been DQ'ed in todays standard in one of his Pep fights, and deffinately the Elorde fight. He could be hit as well, but I tend to think puncher like him a Robinson did not worry to much about the fine art of defense for two reasons. 1. They were taller than most thier opponents and could be away easier from incoming while not moving out of punching range. 2. They wanted to the other fighter to open up, the get thier own destructive shots in. Defense and rough style what I would call "weakness" in Saddler's game.
I think Saddler is one of the most under rated fighters in boxing history. If he had a weakness, perhaps it was consistency as he lost a few decisions to lesser fighters.
i gotta go with the TS: my thought is that it's his footspeed. his performances with pep are brilliant but hard to judge as he just seemed to be his kryptonite
