Why does his run at LW gets touted so highly and he didn't face a legit challenge???????????? Not to mention he was most likely roided to the gills, looking like a middleweight
It's true that he didn't really fight anyone there. 140 would have been the class that would have truly defined his legacy, but he skipped over it chasing after DLH. He may have been as great as Pryor at 140.
i dont respect fighters who admittedly took PED's cheating basterd and he seems like the nice guy... just like the nice girl in the club, and then you get her alone then BAM.
Phillip Holiday and Golden Johnson would be top contenders of not outright rule the division today. You want to see what's so great about lightweight Mosley? [yt]3EPRPyfrqFA[/yt] At his best, he had everything.
People are impressed bt his 32-0(29) record and his 8 IBF title defenses, but while he looked impressive at 135, i agree that when your best LW wins are Phillip Holiday, John-John Molina and JJ Leija you don't exactly rank up there with Roberto Duran, Carlos Ortiz and Ike Williams.
Holliday, Molina, Leija, Johnson were all respectable contenders/former champs. Mosley hardly lost rounds at the weight. Johnston was offered a fight in '99, which he turned down.
Both were good, not great fighters. Even Stevie Johnston would have been a better opponent. At 135, he had freakish size, speed, strength, and power. I don't think that there were many fighters around there at the time to really put him to the test, though. And this is another down period for 135, so saying that Phillip Holiday and Golden Johnson would rule is not really saying much at all. What were Phil Holiday's and Golden Johnson's best wins, btw?
Nobody's arguing he had ATG opposition at Lightweight. But it's still worth it to say that multiple names on his resume could be the man everyone celebrates as the king of the division today. It might speak more to the gap in quality between eras, but Mosley's mainly celebrated for his H2H ability and stylistic completeness at the weight, something he lost down the line. Holiday's best win is an undefeated Ivan Robinson. Johnson went on to beat Freddy Hernandez. who beat Corley and Collazo. Leija beat Azumah Nelson, and went on to beat Mickey Ward and Ivan Robinson.
Ivan Robinson? lol... no comment. Azumah Nelson was near the end of the road by the time Leija got to him, and still managed to stop him in one of their many fights. Freddy Hernandez beat recent versions of Corley and Collazo (2010 and 2011, respectively). Just looking for some perspective here.
Again, nobody's arguing Mosley faced ATG opposition at lightweight, I'm just answering your questions. He beat a few decent fighters, but looked absolutely great doing it.
Let's not forget that a year before nelson drew and then lost with leija, nelson wasn't as past it as we think, as he had beaten jeff fenech. Beating leija is a quality win for mosley, I obviously rate mosleys opponents ahead of whitakers (apart from haugen of course)
Worldclass handspeed and power also a great body puncher. I loved the way Shane fought at 135 I was a huge fan of him back then not so much when moved up when he changed his style.
