Beating Marlon Starling twice was no mean feat .Destroying Jones and McCory was amazing performance .super fights were in the pipe line when I was a lad he was the no1 If he had moved up to light middle who knows what would of happened.

Paul Reyes, Don's life long trainer, said " It was like Don had radar he knew a punch was coming before his opponent threw it & was countering"

The weight issues were very real Cecil. He trained at our gym for the Colin Jones fight. He did all his sessions in a sweatsuit and looked very tight. He got weighed after every session.

I liked Donald Curry. He was a great technician who threw strait punches in an accurate and conservative manner not so dissimilar to that of the great Carlos Monzon. While he was foremost a boxer, he also possessed decent power and established himself early in his career as a potential great.. The problem is that he wasn’t built for longevity nor any weight class which extended beyond welter. Some guys are like that.. the best that can be said for him was that he burnt very bright but for a short period in time...

Currys like one of those boxers in where you have to pay attention to what hes doing- everything is so subtle you usually miss it.
Take the Larocca bout. At one pint he slips a multiple shots from Nino and lands a crunching left hook to the body.
Against Jones he side steps and lands a blazing combination to Jones head.
Starling 2 he puts on a cliinc on infighting.
And Mccroy he slips a jab and then takes Mccroys head off.
But all of these things are done so smooth- no wasted motion.

I mean Jones could fight and Curry just took him apart.
Starling the second time Curry best him good almost dropping him in the last round. And Starling never got that beat up again.
Funny thing- watch the Hwang bout and see how Curry moves- he was known as a mover with a good jab and power.
Latter on he fell in love with his power and fought on the inside alot more.

Curry wasn't much of a mover normally. He moved a lot in the Hwang fight because he got floored.

They gave him a total stumblebum to fight in his own hometown for a vacant title, and he still found himself on the deck.

He was going for the knockout when he got dropped hard. He thought he had Hwang going. And he didn't.

I watched Curry his entire career. He wasn't a big mover. He was usually the aggressor.

The way Leonard stabbed Curry in the back was diabolical. He knows better than to come to Texas again

Had a bit in common with Mike Tyson lol.
Came up and unified, looked like had the potential to go on and remain unbeaten for God knows how long. Then lost to a massive underdog and despite winning other belts was never the same again.!

Agree with you, salsasanchezfan. I thought he was - briefly - an almost perfect fighting machine. The Curry who dismissed the challenge of Jones and McCrory, both very good fighters, would have given a prime SRL all he could handle. No disrespect to McCrory but you can see from the jump that he realises he is in trouble.

    LOL.

Yes I’m sure the entire state of Texas has been holding this grudge for decades just waiting for Ray Leonard to return so they can have the Texas Rangers (either the law enforcement division or the baseball team) capture him and throw him in the Alamo for good.

Wait. Looks like the Lone Star state is going to get its chance: https://www.caller.com/story/news/l...ard-coming-corpus-christi-october/5496998001/

In all truth, Leonard and Mike Trainer gave Curry the best advice he could have gotten: they told him to stay at welter and avoid Mike McCallum and Marvin Hagler … one of whom did tear his head off and the other would have.

Don’t be mad at SRL because Lloyd Honeyghan is your daddy.
