For the sake of my life iv never undestood it. Oscar was a VERY good amatuer. A great young prospect. BUT he never had the beating of his peers like Shane or Tito and fed on former greats like Chavez and Whitaker scraping a debatable decision in the later. This aside he has never done anything fantastically well. He wasnt a power puncher, he didnt have insane speed, he didnt have a stellar defense or footwork. But the dimension he did have he did very well. So why did this man become such a star? He isnt as exciting as watching a prime Sugar Shane. And he wasnt an edge of the seat fighter like Tito or Vargas who were almost always guaranteed a KO with there aggresive styles. So what exactly made Oscar such a draw?
Olympic gold medalist Fought the best fighters of his era Is good looking Mexican/American so he has a wide appeal
Anyone that says that Oscar wasn't entertaining early in his career is a hater plain and simple. That is not why he became a star though. There have been far more entertaining fighters that weren't half the star he is. What set him aside was his looks everyone knows that.
promotion and good looks. Come on, haven't you heard it around in the hispanic communities? If not, then I'll tell you. Here in miami all the older women and even lots of younger ones are saying things like "omg he's so cute". The casual fans which NEVER buy any fights and do not follow boxing at all buy his fights. OMG IT's DE LA HOYA GO QUICK AND BUY THE FIGHT! They don't know **** about his inactivity, how old he's gotten, basically they buy the fights out of ignorance. Oscar knows this and that's why those farce of a fights are made with much smaller opponents like mayweather and Pacquiao. Anyways, I am really turned off on boxing right now. Peace.
Ok theres been lots of gold medalists but none had the pulling power of Floyd. Holy fought the best fighters of his era but he doesnt have anywhere near the drawing power or economic clout that Oscar commands. Is it really just because of his Mexican fan base and good looks?
I almost fell outta my chair laughin at that... Oscar did win titles in 6 weight classes, and he went from rags to riches, so to speak. That stuff doesnt come easily... and he's got a cute wife...
O for gods sake get out of here with that crap. Im asking a simple question that requires an objective viewpoint. Iv watched Oscar rise through the ranks but for me personally his style isnt one that i find particularly exciting. OBVIOUSLY thats a subjective viewpoint and has NOTHING to do with any "hating"..
Ok im not Hispanic and i live in London so i dont know bugger all about any Hispanic community.. That aside is he as big as Chavez in terms of popularity then?
Do you have to ask? Look at the number of female fans that show up for his fights, and you will understand.
There have been other fighters that have fought the best of their era. There have been other gold medalists. There have been other good looking boxers. And there have been other fights with big fanbases. But Oscar's pretty much the only one to have it all, he is a marketing dream.
I get what you're saying though. And yes he is even greater than Chavez in popularity because he knows english, he always speaks like a good little boy on camera and that sorta crap. Chavez appealed more to the fans that follow the sport closely. DLH is like, fight coming up, ::The Entire city of Miami buys the fight:: just because.
i mean, holding weigh-ins 2 days before the fight to let DLH rehydrate for a longer period of time when he was younger? Come on, can he be anymore spoon-fed than that?
