What was the business/marketing/whatever reason for Golovkin/Murray in a tiny venue?

Why that time of day for the American audience in a 900 person venue in Monaco? Or did I get the details wrong? I missed that it was even on at an irregular time and missed the whole thing. My fault I know-not complaining. I'm just puzzled by the choice. I thought Golovkin was fighting out of America on BAD broadcasts to develop his star power to get guys like Cotto in the ring. Why this? Like a prior agreement to fight there again, a tax thing, what? So weird to me. You can't develop star power in American boxing this way, right? Wrong? I thought what he was doing with his last two fights was perfect. New York and California. But going back to Monaco? Isn't this taking a step backwards as far as getting exposure? Or doesn't it matter?

Tickets were 1500 euros, and that was the cost of the cheap seats too. Ringside ones cost 5 times that and touts were selling them outside the venue on the night for considerably more than that as well.

Rich people are there. Great. And how does that get American exposure with all of the regular people that buy PPV's and make up the brunt of America's boxing audience? Maybe without being a snarky queen you could go through it with me when I humbly ask from an admitted position of not knowing? Try it. You might like being half decent, Doc.

Interesting. But I still don't see why it's helpful to the ultimate goal of being a bigger star here. Thanks for answering without being a douche. :yep Some people could learn from that.

The fights in Europe are to build worldwide fans. They take the MC fights whether HBO shows them or not. HBO doesn't have 4 dates a year so they use the 4th fight to build worldwide audience.

I would say a big big chunk of GGG's money from his HBO fights actually comes from overseas licensing, because he has fans worldwide. Having a worldwide brand is important. Individually, all those media markets in SA, Asia, Eastern Europe, West Asia etc are small (dollar wise) but add up licensing from a couple dozen and its a big big increase in a fighter's overall take.

Plus, building the high-roller fanbase is never ever a bad thing. Those casino whales actually have an understated influence regarding making big fights and big money. Case in point is Manny - despite tanked PPV sales, he is able to make the big money fighting Algierie/Rios because the Venetian Macao is willing to bankroll him because he brings in the Asian superwhales.

This helps me see where they're coming from, thank you. I didn't think about HBO not having as many dates as Golovkin was willing to fight in. It's so rare anybody at this level wants to fight all that much I wouldn't of even thought about it. That's why I ask!

I know how much they were going for because some of the boys and I jetted over there for the weekend to watch it. We were going to sail over in the yacht but conditions weren't exactly conducive to good sailing. Anyway, I own a couple of properties over there so we just crashed in one of them. I didn't actually have to pay for my ticket because I know some people in pretty high places over there (I won't start dropping names). A tout approached me as was making my way into the venue and tried to sell me a ticket. He was asking for 5000 euros.

But seriously.. I wonder how much the tickets were going for. The only info I could find said they were starting at €435.00, which is about £320 over here in Blighty.

what xelloss said plus the prince's uncle or brother somebody is a very big triple G fan and wants him to fight there. the Golovkin team is probably getting back huge perks and kickbacks.

thats probally the last time we see GGG in monaco me thinks.they used him as a spring board and it worked.the usa fight freaks will claim him now.kovalov would be good for them now.GGG has outgrown that turf.

You might be right about that. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if he continued fighting over there once a year seeing as how active he wants to be. I'm sure some Americans will try to claim him as one of their own now that he's made California home. He won't stand for it though. I've read more than one or two interviews of his in the past where he has expressed quite extreme Anti-American sentiment.
