    Simple question.

One was rising, one was falling... where did they cross?

We'll leave Mr. Harry out of the question.

Not true. No one, even Dempsey, believed that. And he said as much.

I'm reading Pollack's book because I'm not a skinflint and actually care enough about the subject to lay out hard earned money. And the idea for the thread came up. Since you are a self ordained scholar on Dempsey and his era why don't you enlighten all the intellectual plebes with your magnificent and erudite proclamations.

Huh, you believe that even though he lost various early fights to ordinary competition, & was KOed in 1 vs. Fireman Flynn, & Fat Willie Meehan could REPEATEDLY defeat him in short fights...

Dempsey would beat Langford from his professional debut onward?
Hell, he started boxing in 1914 when Langford was absolutely prime, & in his first six fights all his opponents but one were making their DEBUT. The other one 1-0-1, who he could only defeat on points.
Then in his 7th fight he LOST to Jack Downey, who had the incredible record of 15-9-30!

Maybe nobody in history beats a prime ATG from their first pro fight!
And you have Dempsey winning even though he was no great force for a while?

    C'mon man.

Dempsey turned down fights with Langford, and Jeanette ( In the ring as a sub ), who were well past their primes. He never fought Wills or Greb as champion though he could have. That's 4 ducks.

P4p Langford might have been the best fighter ever, that is until demon dempsey matured and got experience. Guys who gave langford life and death battles such as bob devere , dan flynn who decked langford b twice never saw the second roUND against dempsey !! Gunboat smith defeated langord but got annilhated by dempsey As FUL TON. Who koed langord but got destroyed in one round. Battling jim johnson brefused to spar with dempsey but always gave langford fits as did bill tate. Jim flynn and willie meehan both beat langford, too. However great mr langford was, rest assured, bone crusher dempsey was certainly better still

Fred fulton said dempsey hit twice as hard as Willard !...that dempsey was not only the fastest and the hardest puncher in the ring but likely the hardest puncher ever ! ! 1918
Jess willard one week after his bout with dempsey said , " I want to say there isn't a man as n far back as john l sullivan who hits as hard as dempsey does now and jack hits with equal force in either hand. " he was glad his corner stopped the fight " for i might have been killed by the punches of that young and strong bull." !!!!
Time and time again it was dempsey, more so than anyone else, who awed his opponents as well boxing scribes and spectators

Meehan and Miske had different takes. Meehan thought that Dempsey's right was great but his left was just alright. Miske claimed the opposite. And Meehan thought he could take Dempsey over any distance but couldn't leave California (and their 4 rounders) because of his Navy duties.

And also, Fulton was clamoring for a rematch for years, even going so far as to claim that Dempsey double-crossed him in their fight.

As I am reaching the end of Vol.1 of Pollack's study, it seems Dempsey above all else won on fighting spirit, especially as he rounded into form in 1918. Before that, he was known to warm to his task and start slowly. By 1918, he was just tearing into guys with both fists from the first bell. No one, including Jack himself, claimed he was the most skilled but that he was fast and aggressive and hit hard (which ever hand that punch came from).

Dempsey really remains largely a tantalizing "what if" fighter... so much ability shown on relief of lesser fighters when there were better opponents out there who would really reveal the heights, or limits, of his greatness.

Are you serious ? Are you kidding me ?
    Very strange
At any rate it was dempsey more so than langford, greb, b leonard who awed his opponents, sparring partners, boxing experts
As jack dillon said dempsey was a boxing miracle and greatest natural fighter he ever boxed or saw

Battling jim johnson when asked to sparr again with dempsey said dempsey was the hardest hitter he ever fought, including Johnson, Langford, wills etc and said no. Hed rather fight anyone in the world than box in fun with dempsey
