I guess that the sweet spot would have been when Dempsey was a local level fighter, and Langford was shot, but still dangerous for that level of opponent.

This is one fight of which I cannot say that I am sorry that it never happened!

Reading Seamus' take on Dempsey is like reading Hitlers take on the Jews.

Hey Louis54, go online and get the book " A TALE OF TWO FISTS: JACK DEMPSEY" by Damon Runyon. It was recently republished. It tells of Dempsey's rise and thru the Willard fight. Simply great with first hand memories of Dempsey from 1919 told to Damon and by others THEN. Fabulous!! A must read from right then, not interpretations from years later. You will love it.

Firstly, I thought my post was very complimentary to Dempsey but then I have learned your comprehension abilities aren't exactly ace.

Secondly, I am willing to cite every contention container within. So, they really aren't my takes but others... and others who, forgive me, are more authoritative on the subject than you.

    Excellent !!
Thats one great reason why pollacks book is both so good and so lauditory of Dempsey..... It all contemporary reports no modern day boxing morons involved

And Pollack doesn't hide from the fact that Dempsey drew the Color Line early and often.

    Actually wills ducked dempsey twice
    smart move on his part
Wills was a sparring partner for fulton but ducked out wh en asked by kearns to spar with dempsey....later on wills gave dempsey a check that is still bouncing
Funny how all the top blacks n sparred with dempsey and fought on the undercards but wills wouldn't

Why would Wills, the best heavyweight in the world, relent to be a sparring partner with Dempsey?

Should he have shined Dempsey's boots afterward?

What was the month and year that Langford/ Dempsey would be a pick'em?

A tough question. Probably January 1918.

Dempsey had a rough 1917 getting Kod' by Flynn, losing and drawing to Meehan, drawing twice to a character named Al Norton. He was largely fighting 4 round fights. Langford though older ( 34-35 ) in 1917, was still beating top opens like Norfolk, Jeannette, and Jim Johnson

By 1918, I think Dempsey became better beating legit contender types.
