Yet he was fine in interviews the next day and drove all the way back to Kansas over primitive roads with primitive suspension a few days later.

I can't find much on it, but there's a painting of a messed of bareknuckle boxer. A lot of those fights left them nearly unrecognisable.

I agree though that internal injuries, especially to the brain, are truely the most gruesome.

Some newspapers claimed that Joe Gans's eye was dislodged from its socket, in his first title fight with Frank Erne, following a clash of heads.

Was it not claimed that Tom Sharkey had bone sticking out in one fight?

I was watching some fight on Friday Night Fights back in 2004 and one of the fighters ear was falling off. That was too real for tv. I just can't remember the two fighters names.

Sebastian Lujan always comes to mind. Margarito took his ear halfway off and it was just flapping around. I was just getting into boxing when I saw it.

I'm sure I'm missing many but the first one that comes to mind is Frazier-Chuvalo.
I'm ignorant on medical terms but: Chuvalo's 'orbital eye bone' was crushed and his eye dropped down on top of it?? One more shot from Joe? Geez, let's go back to the lions vs. the Christians if that's going to be allowed to continue. :)
Anyone remember Alan Minter vs. Sugar Ray Seales? Before the stoppage, Ray had this bulbous, giant, cancerous looking 'balloon' over his eye.
The British commentator, as always, had his 'quip': "Seales has an appalling injury over his eye though it's not as noticeable on such a dark a man as Seales."

I think it was Margarito who had some poor sap’s ear hanging on by a thread.

Don't remember what fight it was, but I read a story yrs ago about a fighter who had his lip sliced off. That must have been insane to see.

Jowcol, I was going to comment on this when I saw the subject matter because I recall Seales-Minter and the incident happening years before this happened to Hasim Rahman. But I remember it differently than you. For some reason I thought it happened to Minter, not Seales. I even remember the Brit announcer saying, "Look at it, it's extraordinary!" Now I'm going to have to do a bit of research on this to jog my memory.

I was gonna say Bassilio or Collins , but I just watched that dempsy/williard fiasco, and I hope there is not a worse beating that has been administered!

Not visiable in the fight....but the Napoles k.o uppercut in Fight #2 with Indian Red, shattered Ernie's eye socket and could have blinded him. Pipino Cuevas in his prime, broke a few faces also.
