Quickest and most destructive was Louis' 1 round massacre of Max Schmeling. It was as brutal as it was beautiful in the contained savagery Louis employed. Louis was a machine that night. Also, kudos have to be given to Joe Frazier on his 4 round destruction of one of the toughest SOB's around in George Chuvalo. He turned his eye into hamburger and forced George to turn away under that left hook.

Why would I read Papa Jack (Which I have read anyway, thanks) or Unforgivable Blackness ( I have the DVD) when I can read the Sydney Morning Herald, Dec 27 .1908...

Yes, that's me in the avatar. One handsome fellow I am.

True this. Read the newspaper accounts not the unforgivable blackness bull**** hype job. Burns was pissed the fight was stopped as he thought he still had a chance at victory. In fact wasn't the stoppage prompted by some fellows under the ring alerting the coppers? Johnson laid a much worse ass-whupping on Jeffries after the initial even rounds in Reno.

The fight stoppage has many different 'explanations'... Common sense being the obvious choice. As it is with EVERY Johnson fight, there has to be some unfathomable rubbish to add some mystery.

    I've heard-
1- Bill Lang motioned the Police to stop the fight.
2- McIntosh wanted to remain liberal in refereeing, thus requesting the
Police to halt proceedings when they felt it necessary. (That does make sense)
3- Burn's corner motioned the Police to stop the fight.

The police stopped the bout, due to Tommy having a 'cinders chance in snow' of getting the better of Johnson.

Since Larry Foley and Jem Mace were kind enough to impliment the advances to Marquis of Queensbury to Australia's game in the early 1880's, the likelyhood of complete floggings via lopsided affairs had been severly curbed. Johnson vs Burns was, in my own estimation, a good example of common sense prevailing. Burns was not horribly tortured, bed ridden for a week, nor suffering any long term affects from the fight.... or short term affects for that matter.

I agree with Johnson vs Jeffries. Jack show boated far less against Jeff's, in comparison to the Burns bout.

The police entered the ring as early as the 13th round and spoke to McIntosh.

Burns did not win a round, talk of him," coming with a late run," is utter crap.

Johnson could have put him away anytime he wanted, same with Jeffries, [after the 1st few rnds], it was pure economics ,film rights sell better if its a long fight.

Burns was totally thrashed and ,carried for a painful tortuous 14rds,and he had it coming.
While we are on the subject, Burns had neither jaundice ,nor influenza ,he gave an interview shortly after the fight ,and stated he overtrained for the fight and came in too light. He did seek a rematch ,why wouldnt he ?He had scored the biggest pay day of any boxer up to that time, but McIntosh knew there was no demand for another onesided slaughter.
