Norton was clearly out and it wasnt nice seeing him eat those bombs when he was already basically out cold and only being held up against the ropes.

I dont think it was avoidable that norton eats one or two more than he should, but the ref should have been in there a lot faster

Perez looked like he was channeling Andrew Smyth's performance in Johansson-Machen. I don't think he was a particularly good referee, and is better suited to judging bouts as a ringside official. (I will allow that he may have improved after I stopped following boxing.)

thats just tony perez doing his usual fine job.robbed from somewhere else

    This content is protected

Some of the most savage brutal KO's ever and referee tony perez was the third-man-in-the-ring for 3 of them.

    1. Tommy Morrison vs Ray Mercer
    2. Gerry Cooney vs Ken Norton
    3. David Tua vs John Ruiz (my favorite Johnny Ruiz fight but that's beside the point... :p )

At Ali/Frazier II, ref tony perez allowed Muhammad Ali to clinch and hold onto Joe Frazier 147 different times during the 12 rd distance without taking any points.
Ali's glove was on the back of Joe's head for literally half the fight, about 13 or 14 clinches each rd by Ali. No action taken by perez. Ali clutched and held more than Johnny Ruiz that night.
Another mistake by tony perez that fight was in rd 2 when Ali staggered Frazier upon which time perez thought he heard the bell and stopped the action prematurely.

    Michael Spinks vs Mustapha Wassaja.
Mustapha was completely out on the ropes, but Spinks landed about 5 more devastating left hooks.
Where was referee tony perez ?

Alexis Arguello vs Ray Boom Boom Mancini. Another bad job by perez.
"To me, I knocked him out in the 12th rd, Boom Boom. I hit him with a right hand, and I hit him, and he turn over and he put the knee the right knee on the canvas. And in the Boxing business says when a boxer turns the back on ya, you automatically win. But the referee was tony perez, the moron. Y'know, Jesus Christ, I say 'tony, what are ya doin'? The guy turned the back on me.' The guy say, 'Alexis, keep fighting. I don't want you to ruin your victory.' I say, 'Hell, man, I knocked the guy out.' 'Keep fighting.'
The guy pushed me to keep hurting Mancini."
    - Alexis Arguello

    Muhammad Ali vs Chuck Wepner.
perez allowed Wepner to hit Ali with rabbit punches throughout the 15 rd fight.
Horrible and incompetent job of officiating.

I agree with this, he looks like hes reluctant to interfere , a referee needs to be a lot more assertive thatn that, its too dangerous having someone so incompetant refereeing such fights

Tony Perez, at one-time was one of the Top 5 referee's in boxing.
Early in his career, he was always alert, and very protective of hurt fighters.

He seemed to lack something, when he was the 'third man in the ring' with
    the Heavyweights.

Always thought, Stanley Christotuldo was better.,,,,,,,,,,

Christodoulou's clinical description of the criteria he used for determining exactly when to stop Pryor-Arguello I was the most extraordinarily precise and explicitly detailed articulate analysis I've ever seen explained by any referee, and he's been in Canastota where he belongs since 2004. (I hope his educational discussion of how he ended Pryor-Arguello I turns up on youtube, as he should be seen speaking for himself on the matter. Viewing the concluding footage immediately after his commentary, and looking for what he saw, I agreed that he nailed it perfectly, and did not let Pryor's final assault proceed too long as some were suggesting he might have. He squelched further debate on the subject with his account.)

Perez forgot and thought he was officiating a cockfight...wha was Norton, after all to him...just another bird about to get his head ripped off...no big deal..there was no sense in the last few seconds of that fight with Norton sitting on those ropes getting his head blasted off...Perez should have been suspended for that.

from the angle where the ref was and the angle from viewing it at home whether on the couch or chair it can have two perspectives on when the ref should of stepped in i watched it on you tube and from the angles that i was able to zoom in and out and look at every possible angle i agree with you the ref should of stepped in sooner but the ref may of had a different angle and was not able to fully see what the fans saw from viewing it on you tube:yep:think

Possibly '2' more punches, and Ken Norton may have been killed.......or suffered
    a broken neck.

Tony Perez was busy 'posing for pictures before the fight', with the
    Puerto Rican Travel Magazine,,,,,,'El Destanacione'

i think in boxing a fighter is trained to keep punching until either the fighter hits the deck or the ref steps in look there are many instances where a fighter has landed punches while a fighter was out on the ropes or down on one knee that is why i believe the ref needs to be in the best position possible to see what is going on and be in the best position to either step in and give the fighter a standing 8 count stop the fight or count the fighter out:yep:think
