What was the point in Hatton defending his WBU Title all those times?

I've only been following boxing 7 or 8 years and looking back through Hatton's record he defended his WBU title loads of times. What was the point in this? I don't even think that this title still exists.

Surely when he was defending the WBU crown against average fighters he could of been fighting bigger names for bigger titles? I just feel that Hatton wasted a few of his prime years fighting for the WBU title and has only ever really had 7 or 8 big fights which isn't alot in a 47 fight career.

  2. By the time Canelo gets to 47 fights he will have had.........about 7 notable ones.

Helped to pack out the MEN against international opposition which made Hatton and ****** a shedload of cash whilst giving him international experience but against sub world level fighters.

the wbu title was doing the rounds amongst a few british fighters back then farnelll, takaloo, elcock.murphy, jennings to mention a few all fought/won and defended the tittle similar to hatton did, granted hatton defended it a shitload more times.but i always remember ricky always saying back then he wanted the big fights, again was frank happy just filling the MEN every few months with low risk fights for ricky?and there was a few good fights in those wbu days for hatton, but ricky always maintained he wanted to step up

This. The figures at the time bandied about were between £400k and £500k for those fights at the M.E.N.

Equally Ricky was MORE than happy with this arrangement. Remember he turned down a shot at the EBU vs Otkay Urkal. He reneged on his WBO mandatory position refusing a fight with Demarcus Corley. Likewise his WBO shot vs Kelson Pinto was also nixed. He also reneged on his WBA mandatory shot vs Vivian Harris. All in favour of routine defences of the WBU -under the auspices of World Title boxing- and in every case he blamed the other fighter for the title shots not being made.
Ricky purposefully choose the easiest path of least resistance on his way to a world title. Much like Calzaghe at the time he was a comfort fighter making great money off a noddy belt. The worst part of the whole WBU debacle is Ricky actually considered himself a World Champion when he had that title and said so himself on TV.

If Hatton was making £400k/£500k. How much do you think Frank cleared net?

How many 22 year olds do you know with 41 fights do you know? The kid turned pro at 15 and recently has been fighting some of the best veteran names in the sport and winning. He also holds a recognized World Title and moved up two weight divisions successfully. But you think there's a comparison with Ricky?

Wouldn't have a clue. Those were the mooted figures i recall at the time. Iv got no way of verifying them. Suffice to say Ricky was definitely comfortable off those fights as it was a bone of contention with Joe who complained bitterly to ****** about the sums Ricky made.

Assume Frank would have made a **** load out of advertising. Thinking back then, alcohol and gambling firms must have been falling over themselves to get involved with Hatton. (Given his following)

I don't actually think Ricky was to blame for that one. I think it was down to fish face messing Pinto around and vice versa. Pinto would have easily been Hatton's best opponent at that point, and might have been too risky.

I believe some allegations were aimed at fish face over it at the time and some kind of injunction was taken out or something, I can't remember. Turns out Pinto's misses was about to drop and he never had any intentions of fighting Ricky. Allegedly...

Personally i don't know and don't care. As the only thing that came out of SN back then was excuses. Ricky and Joe had umpteen fights that never came off and every time is was someone blaming someone else for the debacle. And IIRC Pinto's problems were visa related. But personally i think Ricky had no interest at all in fighting him. Pinto was an unknown who could punch. He would have upset that gravy train pretty badly.
