Foreman was trying to rebuild his confidence after the Ali loss. He'd destroyed Frazier and Norton in two rounds. He wanted to prove he was still a ferocious fighter by taking on five tough opponents in one day. He also wanted to show the world he didn't have endurance issues. If all five guys went the distance, he'd have had to fight 15 rounds. (Something he'd never done.)

The original lineup for the Toronto Five was Mac Foster, Boone Kirkman, Terry Daniels, Pedro Agosto and Alonzo Johnson. Foster and Kirkman had power. Daniels had challenged Frazier for the title. Agosto was a respected veteran. Johnson was the easy mark of the five. He'd been retired for a few years.

However, Foster and Agosto ended up pulling out at the last minute and were replaced with Jerry Judge and Charley Polite - who weren't very good. So the quality of the overall lineup took quite a dip.

Then Ali showed up to do commentary. Then Foreman had difficulty knocking out some of the lesser lights. And then it all kind of came apart from there.

The problem for George was about 30 million people tuned in to watch him embarrass himself.
