I don't understand why would Cotto and his people, take such a high risk, low reward fight, while looking extremely mediocre at that, against a shot, 38 year old Mayorga. Proving to me what I always thought about Cotto, that he isn't an elite fighter. What was the purpose of the Mayorga fight? Did this fight make Cotto's stock rise or fall?
Mayorga is a very big, strong, relentless jr middleweight. Cotto is a very small jr middleweight. Miguel needed a fight like this to see if he can cut the mustard at 154.
For Mayorga, this was a chance to pay off his debt to Arum. For Cotto, this was suppose to be a tune up fight. Only my opinion, folks.
he made a couple of mil and got a ko to ensure a few more paydays and yes, cotto is,or at least was,an elite fighter
Household name to add to his resume at 154 (which had previously consisted of Yuri Foreman...not exactly a household name). And, entertainment value as said. It was somewhat dangerous for Cotto heading in, but as long as he boxed smart (which he mostly did) this was his fight to lose, and ultimately worth the risk for the reward.
You know Mayorga said marg is the only fighter he genuinely dislikes when they interviewed him right before the fight backstage. Mayorga a G.
It was suppossed to be an easy comeback fight for Cotto against a shopworn name fighter that could produce a good payday.
:deal **** was fun man. Had a good time... and it appeared so did the crowd at MGM, and who knows how many PPV's, prolly atleast 450K. Fights like that one keep the casuals happy too, and believe it boxing needs the casual fans $$. (hardcores don't pay...).
