What was thinking Thurman ?

His strategy was good. Staying outside, making fundora move, which we saw he doesn't do too well, no shame there with those long levers. Then surprise him with attacking forward while fundora is still in the midst of stepping Forward.
He just was a bit too small and probably too old.
Fundora is still open for These kinds of shots. He is totally focussed on offense when he attacks (at least in this fight he felt save enough to fight like that) and the overhand is dangerous for him if someone can land it with force, like mendoza did. That's not really thurmans signature move, though.

 

I favored Fundora the whole way except after the weigh-in. I liked Keith's confidence and bought into the hype.

Keith had a bad game plan. I think, in order to beat Fundora, must get inside. Staying at range allows Fundora to generate power. Getting inside limits Fundora to uppercuts or hooks. Must get inside. Keith tried throwing looping shots from the outside and couldn't get inside. He got touched in R1 or R2 trying to get inside, almost KD, then sort of gave up. No head movement, no latwral movement, no high guard, no getting low. Need those things to get inside.

Hopefully Ortiz gets Fundora next. Ortiz will stop Fundora.

 

I thought his strategy was terrible
Esp considering not at any point did he actually find his reach

Fighting on the inside would have probably been a better option as Fundoras arms are too long to connect quickly

But Thurman was doomed regardless tbh
Part time should have never agreed to this one

 

He had a crap game plan for sure
He should have likely gone all out on his shield in the 1st 5-6 rounds - haggler hearns style
Anything would have been better then getting nailed repeatedly from the outside!

 

Have you seen fundora fight on the inside? Before the mendoza ko he was doing that exclusively and also in the thurman fight he didn't have a problem with it. His head is just above trouble and he knows very well how to dish out more than he takes and how to effectively punch in that range. To me thurman saw his best chance - to get fundoras long legs moving and find the gaps in his steps.

 

You just don’t come back old, after a long lay off, against a 6’5” junior middleweight who throws a thousand punches…..

 

What was thinking Thurman? Or was thinking Thurman giving a sermen? Or what was Thurman thinking?

 

This fight was one too many. Keith Thurman was a great champion once, but his welterweight career didn't live up to his potential. He needs to hang up his gloves. This is a good warning for Kavaliauskas and Errol Spence Jr. as well.

 

How many fights did Thurman have since he fought Pacman in 2019? That says it all. His career was over 7 years ago.

 

I have and despite him being decent at it, I still think it's a fighters best chance with him
He has learnt how to fight at range now and not many people will be able to get past that
Thurman being one of them

Once he started (and is becoming more adept) fighting on the outside instead of those trench wars.................yeah, he's becoming a handful. Made absolutely no sense for him to fight on the inside...................him Paul Williams, yeah they both ran from their height advantages
