    "Tyson-Stinks" of 1988.....

    MR.BILL

    That was Tyson's first MAJOR PPV of note...... Tyson may have appeared earlier on some **** PPV net for some regional east coast outlet... Who knows for sure???

    MRBILL, you wouldn't be mocking Spinks if he'd out-pointed Tyson as The Ring & Ali predicted. With Tyson, people like to downgrade his opponents after they've been obliterated, rather than giving him the credit he deserves.

    Was just discussing elsewhere about how 'stars' these days are put on PPV at an early stage (at least they are here in Britain). Just wondered what stage Tyson was at back then when he first aired on ppv.

    At the time Tyson-Spinks had the same kind of build up that FOTC had.

    2 Undefeated Champions, a dispute as to who the real Champion was and credible sportswriters and boxing figures with different opinions on the outcome...

    Tyson's annihilation of Spinks made his stock skyrocket at the time but in hindsight it was a letdown to those who were put off by the lack of competitiveness in the fight. These days there are some who even discredit the victory as Tyson beating up on a "blown up LHW" despite history showing that a "blown up lightheavyweight" can produce results in the Glamour Division.

    Tyson was just too good at the time and he was facing a guy who really didn't have much to slow him down, or stop him.

    So while you call it Tyson "Stinks" keep in mind the magnitude of the fight.

    It was the richest fight in history at that time; Tyson got paid 22 million for that fight. And that was in 1988.

    Think about it.

    I was shocked but not totally surprised that Spinks exited in 91 seconds back in '88 against a raging Tyson.... Prior to the opening bell, I had predicted that Tyson would KO Spinks inside 3 rds..... But the main event did suck long tube-steak....

    "Tyson-Spinks":tired
    "Tyson-McNeeley":rofl
    "Tyson-Seldon":fire

    Them events were some of the biggest "rip-the-public-off" events of all-time PPV history.....

    Tyson was peaked at a ripped 218 pounds in June 1988 when he smoked Spinks like a Kool cigarette....... BUT! Fact also is, Spinks was unusually bulky at 212 pounds with two knee braces on and, he moved about the ring like he was standing in mud.... Spinks was scared shitless and froze like a rabbit at the opening bell.... Spinks moved and threw missing right hands outta fear..... Meanwhile, Tyson was on fire......

    Why do Tyson fans have to always take it too far. That's the problem.

    Not to mention a bit too sensitive. Mr.Bill calling Spinks, "Stinks", is no more than his usual banter, not an insult towards the man. And the fight did disappoint anyone who was looking to see more than a single minute of action.

    Regardless of the freaking hype back in '88, I knew Tyson was gonna waste Spinks.. However, again, I thought it would take Tyson 3 rds to do it... I was wrong...

    I like Michael Spinks, but he stunk to high heaven in that '88 PPV farce...... Spinks was the heaviest (212) of his career and also at his worst at a mere age 31 yrs.....

    Spinks looked and fought Tyson like a man who was there to collect 13 million smackers and then get out of Dodge city on the first stage-coach outta town.....

    In truth, Spinks was initially dropped by a body blow from Tyson which led to the 8-count... The final side-arm right thrown by Tyson did land, but not with the type of thudding impact that would cause a world class heavyweight to go out on his back with his eyes rolled upward in his head.... Spinks was a bit on the brittle side as a heavy....

    I once thought Tyson from '86 to 1990 was top-5 of all-time, but his resume and actions after his stint in the pokey for that questionable **** charge of 1992, has me now rating Tyson still rather highly overall, but he now places # 9 on my ATG heavyweight champ ratings list.... His legacy has dipped pretty bad since the issue of the "Ear Biting" scene of 1997 with Evan Fields in Vegas..... PLUS! Them horrid losses to Danny Williams and Kevin McBride back in 2004 and 2005 will haunt his ass forever.... WORD!

    When you consider Tyson's popularity at that particular time, I was young but that fight was being talked about during basketball games and was dominating headlines leading up to the fight.

    This is a guy who got paid 22 million dollars; you don't get that kind of money even nowadays. Wlad has yet to net 20 million in 1 fight and this is 22 years later, and he's the Heavyweight Champion with a fiercely loyal following in Germany and Europe. The fight was so short and one sided that in hindsight its easy to criticize but I remember i heard about that fight without being the boxing fan that I am today because it was on the news, family members, cousins and kids at school talking about it. I didn't see it live but the Event (not fight but event) was huge- Plain and simple.

    You don't have to be a Tyson fan to acknowledge that. And no I'm not trying to aggrandize Tyson vs Spinks but I'm simply giving an accurate portrayal of what the fight was in foresight.

    There were talks that the last time a fight carried that much energy and that much electricity prior to the opening bell was Ali vs. Foreman in Zaire. Before that was FOTC.
