atsch I thought it was a legitiment question to ask about an ATG.:huh I don't think it was because I had the word "****" in my title.
No. They'll ban me maybe. I was reading a biography oF Gene Tunney & it said he had to fight Dempsey in Philadelphia, because the NY State Athleteic Commssion banned Dempsey from fighting in NY becuase he refused to fight his Black mandatory challenger... And I basically question whether Dempsey thought he was above fighting a Black man or was the scared to fight one? Or was it his management that refused to get him a fight against one...
I believe that Jack Kearns, his manager, didnt like blacks too much. I remember reading this some whedre but I can't recall where I read it. They made it sound like he tried to deter black opposition, especially with title shots, as much as possible. Don't see why they would erase ur post either man.
I know. And it disappeared within minutes after I put it up. Probably because they thought it would bring up alot of racist responses, but there are other threads that do that...so what was the problem here? :huh Did Dempsey ever fight a Blackman in his entire career?
I'm not trying to start trouble & believe me, I'm a big Jack Dempsey fan. Just found it strange that he refused to fight a Blackman, causing him to be banned from fighting in NY. Don't you think that would have caused many fans of that era the question the same thing I am??? BTW, Tunney was a great one. 61-1, only losing to the dirty windmill, Harry Greb.
dempsey did fight black fighters, just not as champion and that was kearns fault (although dempsey could have made him). harry wills even said it wasn't jack's fault he didn't fight him.
The Human Windmill. My Dad used to tell me about Greb & many others. I can appreciate his rip 'em apart style, but he didn't have much in the way of technique at all. Amazing the guy managed to fight with one eye. Died right after a fight, I believe. Some kinda complication with his breathing? I forget...
That was the guy that he was supposed to fight, but didn't which allowed Tunney to get his 1st shot at JD.
