Depends on how easy it would be for you to get down. If you don't have much fat it might take too much out of you to get down, if you can get down. If you're comfortable at featherweight and lean it might be best to stay there.
I think at that weight your could make 118 lbs, is 123 lbs your wAlk around weight? If not then I wouldn't try to drain to much weight as you have to fight the same day as the weigh in.
I guess it's hard to say, your coach might be the best to answer that. But another important thing to consider....your age. Are you a teenager? Are you expecting to grow in the next year or so? It doesn't sound like a drastic drop, but if you're still growing, a might be less inclined to drop weight - especially since you're not overweight. If you put on some muscle, you'll naturally be heavier too. So you have to account for natural growth and muscular growth.
personally I go up a division because I have the speed advantage, I only do this because I want better competition and to test my power.
I think this question, and all other questions like this are a complete waist of time. Am I too tall, fat, short, is my reach long enough, are gloves stuffed or inflated. Seriously, enough already.
fight what your comfortable at, cutting weight will weaken you very badly, 5 - 6Ibs does'nt look a lot but it is for the littles guys, My advise to you and this would go for me if I was fighting, I'd rather would fight at a weight I was comfortable at and be a little small for the weight but strong healthy and full of energy, than be big for the weight but left drained and weakened, its up to you. If you get training and your eating healthy and the weight gets down naturally without a struggle then I don't see no problems, but I would never advise anyone to cut weight, its dangerous for your health plus it will take time that you should be using for working on skills, technic and your gameplan for your fight. good luck with your career
wait a minute.... Didn't you just step into the gym for the first time last week? How can you be competing in the featherweight division already?
I'm not, my coach is getting information from me, so he can see which division has the most local fighters.
Oh i see. I think many of us agree it might be premature to think about what division you should be fighting at, so soon. My advice, don't over think it. Get comfortable with sparring, enjoy it. Get a fight or two and then decide if you should move down. You'll never know how you'll fare in actual competition until you actually do it. Many of us are so used to seeing so many people train for months before realizing boxing is not for them.
As my friend always says he prefers to fight bigger guys where hes comfortable at the weight rather than drain himself, Id stay at the weight your at and gradually move up as your body grows, out of interest how old are you?
You guys should've took my advice. I'd rather deal with trolls than noobs. At least trolls are entertaining at times.
