After his defeat to Williams (where he fought very negatively) the media just crucified him. I think the pressure, taunting and bad media commentary just got to him psychologically and he was ill equipped to deal with it. He was a big guy that - when confident - could pull out a good result. When he lacked confidence, it was as though a lightbulb switched off in his head and he was like a lamb going to the slaughterhouse. He was too soft for boxing put simply.
The beeb gave him to much money, he got lazy because he did not need money, he then ate to much for a lot of the fights and got soft and fat for some fights, he managed himself, refused to listen to any one, any one rememebr the look of disinterest he had when joe bugner was talking to him in the ring after a poor fight ?, fair play joe was not great, but he had been there and had fought great fighters, and harrison looked at him like he was a nobody
That whole 2000 olympic boxing team sucked. Jermain taylor has an average career. Probably the best of that bunch is cotto is a few steps shy of greatness but a very good fighter.
Quite simply, whilst he had most of the offensive skills needed to be a world-level fighter, he was scared of being hit.
Not sure i dont know much about him and havent watched many of his fights but didnt he not turn pro til his real late 20's or 30's maybe he hung in the ams too long its tough for some to make the transition from am to pro look at a guy like Mercer or Biggs, Gold Medal guys who did not win the title well Mercer got the WBO but that was early WBO before it was recognized Harrison was in a difficult era end of Lewis beginning of Klitschko
Not really, calvin brock, samuel peter, and Alexei Lezin (a three time euro champ and reigning world champ, who had wins against wlad, vitali and valuev) were all competing. It wasnt a bad field. He won because he was a really good amateur. But this was where he spent his prime.
The gold medal that mercer won was in what is effectively the cruiserweight division. So, he was competing at a higher weight as a pro. Tyrell Biggs won a gold medal in a games that didnt include competitors from, the ussr, cuba, poland, hungary, romania, bulgaria and east germany. So these golds are a much lesser achievement than audleys.
