To be honest, lots of good points have been made about Jones going up and down the weights, age and a style that he appeared unable to adjust but Joe is always so emphatic in his opinion, I just thought I'd put it out there.
Getting older is the only thing that went wrong with Roy. He beat Hopkins,Toney dominated pretty much everyone he faced in his Twenties early thirties. So he lost in his late 30s and 40s. So did Robinson,Louis,Ali and everyone else. Father time bests everyone sooner or latter. Now everyone says his chin was suspect- Funny never seen him wobbled against Hopkins,Toney or anyone when he was younger. You going to of course tell me from 1989 to 2004 nobody ever landed a soild punch on Jones? And if that was indeed the case he wax the greatest boxer that ever lived that managed to fight for 15 years and not get hit cleanly once.
Thats why I laugh at JC fans who point out he beat Jones. Jones would win 2 of his next 5 bouts after JC. And JC while in his own right was a remarkable boxer and certainly an alltime great was not in Jones class. Prime for prime Jones wins and by stoppage.
Roy Jones wasnt just athleticism - he had a great ring IQ and skills. Zab was athletic. So were alot of other boxers. And yet they didnt have close to the career Roy had. Reggie Johnson- darn good fighter. Multi weight champion. Very compent pro. Roy spanked him so bad I was in shock. Thulane Maligna- same thing. Gave Benn a great fight the first time and gave Eubank problems as well. Won the title a couple of times. Roy PLAYED with him. Stopped him in 6.
