This is an old story but likely not true. In the original story Greb was scoping Dempsey out in his training camp when Dempsey asked him to join the sparring staff. Greb, as the legend says, opted not to stating that he would feel like a thief taking Jacks money and that nobody could get him ready for Dempsey. Its true that Greb picked Tunney to beat Dempsey and thought Dempsey looked bad in training he was still suffering from a bad cut over his eye from the Flowers fight (not a condition condusive to sparring)and had been advised by his doctor to retire from the sport or risk the blindness in his bad eye spreading to his good eye resulting in total blindness, a condition called sympathetic opthalmia. In short inwardly and outwardly Greb was in no condition or frame of mind to accept a sparring position for anyone.
