it does say something about charles and what class of fighter he was. i wanted to think about a middleweight who could switch careers with charles and no middleweights that could do this come immediately to my mind. the other part of that thought experiment is how charles would have done if he got to fight other middleweight's opponents eg monzon, hopkins, hagler, giardello. those are my top four guys that come to mind right away at middleweight and my thought is that charles would have dominated their opponents pretty well, including them. but its all theory, its nothing very solid to go on i like hagler too, and you'd be crazy not to, but there are other fighters at middleweight who fought some real true all timers at 160 which hagler i cant fully say the same thing about. joey giardello had tougher opponents, and while we should say that hagler would have beat these kinds of all timers at 160 had those two switched careers, the fact is he didnt. so when we try to understand just how good hagler was i think there is just a lot of theory in it too. same story with hopkins. hagler was great but the kind of credibility we give him (and hopkins) as the very best middleweights ever is a little inflated if not at times disingenuous
Giardello I really like but he is in no way top 4 material! Benton schooled him, Webb battered him and Dick Tiger was the best of that period IMO. Hagler Vs Overlin is an interesting hypothetical; how'd ya see that?
Exactly. So don't think you can hold Charles' weight jumping against Hagler in a hypothetical fight at middle?
i was using that just as a way to show what kind of talent charles had. it was just an artifact to say that charles was great, and i couldnt confidently have hagler beating him head to head. i dont expect hagler to fight rocky marciano. but charles was a rare talent, and he actually did it. it says something about him
Well, Minter for obvious reasons, then Hearns, Duran, Hart, and Briscoe. Hart was a big win because Hagler had already gone into the lion's den of Philadelphia, the unofficial proving ground for aspiring middleweights, and come away empty the first two times. One more loss there could have spelled the end of serious consideration for him as a contender. That was huge. And Briscoe because...........well, if you were a middleweight contender then, you had to go through him. That was the rule. Despite his age, Bennie was still a litmus test.
Hearns Duran Mugabi...The next 3 are pretty hard to pick..I for sure wanna put Minter in there, I just recently watched that fight for the first time..But this is a toughy!..Great thread TBOOZ!
Don't think anyone could. But, as already stated, Charles having succes at higher weights don't come into this. It's quite likely Hagler wouldn't have the success Hearns had at higher weights, but we all know what happened when they met at MW. Hagler would also kill Jimmy Ellis at MW, but get beat up by him at HW. Hagler had a perfect frame for MW (at least when the weigh-in was the same day), but probably wouldn't move up that well.
