He was rushed into the Holmes fight. The only one who benefited from that fight was Holmes. Easy payday.

Don't be fooled. Plenty of top 10 heavys could have beaten Marvis. The Tillis fight could have been stopped in the second round when Tillis had him eating unanswered shots.

He fought in the wrong division with the wrong style .. Marvin idolized his father and it cost him as a professional.

So true, Joe tried to make Marvis a replica of himself, many father's are guilty of this.

Okay, did anyone here who was around at the time think that Larry was going to blow out Marvis in round one? I thought Frazier would give Holmes a hard time, at least for a few rounds. I was shocked when Holmes steamrolled him.

After that, though, you could confidently predict a very early Tyson KO of Frazier. But he never lost any other fight and did take on a few notable names, though not top-5 types.

I thought there was a possibility of an Ali-Spinks I-type of fight. An upset seemed to be in the air. Holmes had looked bad six months earlier against Spoon, who was one of Marvis' peers.

Holmes gave up the WBC belt instead of fighting Page. Larry didn't seem like he was as good as he used to be. And a big deal was made that Marvis wore the same green trunks his dad wore against Ali in the Fight of the Century.

It all seemed like the timing was ripe for an upset.

Then, after Holmes wiped him out inside a round, that all seemed silly. And reality started to seep in.

Marvis wearing his dad's trunks was just another example of how Joe Frazier was living thru his son. Ray Mancini's story of winning the title his dad never got to fight for had happened a year or so earlier. But Ray didn't wear his dad's trunks. It wasn't about his dad "living" thru Ray. It was about Ray trying to honor his dad or accomplish something his dad was denied.

But Joe had his title run. It was over. With Marvis and Joe, it was like Joe wanted to see himself in the ring again. So he made Marvis fight like him (when Marvis didn't fight like that in the amateurs) and he had Marvis wear the same trunks Joe wore when he beat Ali so Joe's trunks could be in there when Marvis "won" the title.

There was something messed up about it.

But, yes, I do remember thinking there was a chance Marvis could pull it off. Seemed like the pieces were falling into place ... until you realized it was all fantasy.

I'd have much preferred to see Marvis go after the winner of Spoon-Page or the WBA strap. Seemed like that's what the guys he came up with in the amateurs were doing. He'd have probably fit in nicely with them.

I'd have liked to have seen Marvis-Page or Marvis-Tubbs in the pros. Even Marvis-Witherspoon. He'd fought and beaten most of them as amateurs already. He could definitely hang with them. If the HBO tournament wasn't going on, maybe he'd have gotten a shot at Bonecrusher (who he'd already beaten) and his belt. Who knows.

Ditto what a lot of has been said here- His dad was his biggest weakness and he was in the wrong weightclass.

I totally agree, sometimes us silly fathers try to live our lives through our children, it is wrong, but we love our kids very much, maybe as was posted Joe tried to live through Marvis, who loved his pop.
